Liam Mellows Lá na gClub

Thu, May 14, 2009

As part of the GAA’s 125 year celebrations, Liam Mellows GAA Club ran a highly successful Lá na gClub/Family Day at their clubhouse and grounds at Ballyloughane on Sunday. Organised predominantly by the club’s women’s committee, the fun began in the early afternoon for the younger members with hurling and camogie blitzes, egg and spoon races, sack races, and face painting. An underage Poc Fada competition for both girls and boys attracted considerable interest, but it was the mums’ match that provided the best entertainment for the kids. An exciting game of two halves also took place – the first half hurling, the second half Gaelic football. The match involved players of a wide age profile, including a number of fathers and sons playing against each other, in addition to county star Aonghus Callanan. Due to the outstanding success, Liam Mellows intend organising a similar day again next year. The club, which was established in 1933, is currently developing itsclubhouse and grounds at Ballyloughane, Renmore.
