Johnny Glynn's charges were in control from the first whistle and strikes from Peter Dravins, David O'Brien, and Jason Molloy, in addition to two own-goals, reflected their dominance over a Salthill outfit that failed to build on a promising result against fellow strugglers Wexford Youths.

Following a hectic weekend of football action last Saturday and Sunday, three of the county football quarter-finals are down for decision this Sunday. There is a double header in Pearse Stadium with Carraroe taking on Milltown at 3.45pm and Salthill/Knocknacarra facing Moycullen at 5.30pm. Claregalway, who saw off NUIG last weekend, take on championship favourites Corofin in Tuam at 5.30pm. The outstanding quarter-final between Tuam Stars and either Cortoon Shamrocks or Mountbellew/Moylough and Micheal Breathnachs could not be fixed due to the ongoing shenanigans with Mountbellew/Moylough’s appeal.

Last weekend saw record crowds through the gates at Drom as the seventh annual Umbro Galway Cup tournament came to a close; with more than 20 games played over four pitches to determine each category winner. Some 1,100 players and coaches attended the four day event, which in the past has seen many young Irish hopefuls succeed all the way to international and professional level.

The Galway ladies footballers’ 2011 championship campaign was brought to an end by reigning All-Ireland champions Dublin at St Brendan’s Park in Birr on Saturday – ending a disappointing year for Gay O’Brien’s squad. After only managing two first half points, Galway improved dramatically after the restart but failed to turn their lengthy spells of possession into badly needed scores. After sending over the first point of the game the Jackies were handed a dream start when Amy Ring’s effort from far out on the right-hand side dipped fiercely and landed in the corner of the net to stun Galway.

The Galway minor hurlers head to Croke Park this Sunday to take on Clare in the All-Ireland semi-final at 1.30pm. Mattie Murphy’s charges had a facile win over Antrim in the quarter-final, winning on a score-line of 8-26 to 0-12, and they know that next Sunday will be a giant step up in intensity and standard.

However it is a step for which they believe they are ready. Murphy, who has had tremendous success in coaching All-Ireland winning minor teams for his county over the years, is quietly confident that his charges can reach another decider: “We have worked hard all year and many of the lads have been there before so we are confident that they will be used to what is required on Sunday. Clare have some good players and they are very strong around the middle with Jamie Shanahan at centre-back, and Tony Kelly and Colm Galvin at midfield. If we compete well there, break-even and nullify O’Connell at centre forward we won’t be far away.”

Fourteen of the 16 teams left in the county championship are scheduled to be in action this weekend. There is a double header at Pearse Stadium on Saturday evening with the other five games fixed for Sunday. The Cortoon Shamrocks and Micheal Breathnachs fixture cannot go ahead as Mountbellew/Moylough continue with their ill thought out appeal process. They have been beaten twice on the field of play this season already and they should just move on from those defeats. Four of Sunday’s games are down as double headers at Corofin and Tuam, with Carraroe and Annaghdown on in Pearse Stadium. There will be extra time in any of the games that end in a draw.

The Galway minor footballers will take on a very highly rated Dublin outfit in the All-Ireland semi-final in three weeks’ time at Croke Park, following their 1-9 to 0-9 victory over Cavan last weekend in Longford. Their semi-final is fixed for August 28 and will be followed by the senior semi-final between Donegal and the winners of Tyrone and Dublin.

The seventh annual Umbro Galway Cup takes place this weekend and former Ireland and Liverpool player Ronnie Whelan was on hand to officially launch this year’s event. The four day tournament kicked off yesterday at Drom, the home of Salthill Devon, and runs right through to Saturday. Forty nine teams from five countries will play 125 games and compete to be named winner of their category.

The tournament consists of five sections - the 1994 Boys, 1996 Elite, 1996 Boys, 1998 Elite, and 1998 Boys. The action got under way yesterday at 9.30am, with the Galway District League losing 2-1 to Lucan in the 1998 Boys Elite section. Salthill Devon drew 1-1 with Donegal Schoolboys, while Mervue United rescued Galway’s day with a 3-1 win over the NDSL.
