Greenfields edge local rivals in hockey league opener

Greenfields1 secured a victory in their first outing in the Connacht Senior Hockey League with a narrow 1-0 win over defending title holders Galway1 at a chilly Dangan on Saturday evening.

The first half was dominated by strong defence from both sides with only a few clear chances. A good break up the right from Liz Tighe was Greenfields’ opening salvo, but nothing came of it, while Galway’s midfielder Elaine Carey made good progress from midfield, but the resulting short corner was well defended by a solid Greenfields’ defence marshalled by Clodagh Grealy and Catherine Moore.

Historic win for Galway Titans over Moycullen

Galway Titans have pulled off a surprise victory over Moycullen to advance to the next round of the u-20 National Basketball Cup.

Prior to the weekend’s games both Moycullen and Maree would have been tipped as title contenders, but with Maree losing to Templeogue by 74-38, the Titans will now carry the Galway flag into the competition.

The county minor hurling final produced a terrific game on Sunday in Kenny Park with Tommy Larkins stealing a win at the death over Turloughmore by 4-8 to 2-13.

It was an enthralling game throughout with no shortage of talking points, not least the extra time at the end of that game that allowed Jason Flynn to point a late 65 to give his side a one-point victory.

An attractive and intriguing Connacht club semi-final takes place on Sunday at Pearse Stadium (2.30pm) when Salthill/Knocknacarra take on the current provincial club champions St Brigid’s (Roscommon).

It has the makings of a terrific game and there should be a good crowd in attendance to see the kingpins of Roscommon club football, St Brigid's, taking on a club with a 100 per cent record in the Connacht club championship, having previously won the titles in 1990 and 2005.

In grabbing their third win of the campaign before the break for the autumn internationals, Connacht leapfrogged their opponents to conclude the series of 10 games on the bounce, including the opening two Heineken Cup rounds, with a much-needed victory.

Wegians lose it late

Galwegians lost a game they appeared to have in the bag when they conceded two late tries to lose by the narrowest of margins, 34 - 33, to Old Wesley in Donnybrook on Saturday.

In a thrilling eight-try contest in which the lead changed four times, the Blues one again lost away to Leinster opposition.
