Loughnane calls it a day after glorious career

Ireland’s most successful race walker Olive Loughnane has announced that she is to retire from athletics. The Loughrea woman competed at the highest level, and won a silver medal at the 2009 World Championships.

Ms Loughnane believes that the time is right for her to retire and hand the torch to a new generation: “My feeling was that I would quit while I was ahead and that I would know that the time was right from a personal and performance point of view. That time is now.”

Vital win for Wegians in hard-fought battle

Galwegians came away with four vital points in a hard-fought battle away to Old Crescent in this re-arranged Ulster Bank Division 2a fixture in Limerick on Saturday.

The Blues came into this game on the back of four successive league wins, and they were favourites to add another scalp in their late push for promotion. However they were pushed all the way by a dogged home team, whose performance belied their lowly league standing. The hosts took the lead in the fourth minute after Wegians were penalised at the first scrum, and Padraig Quinn split the uprights to give his side a 3-0 lead. Remarkably this was to prove their only score of the game, as a massive disciplined and defensive effort was required from Wegians for the next 76 minutes.

Galway footballers are hoping to build on last weekend’s encouraging victory over Derry in round one of the National Football league when they face Louth at the Gaelic Grounds in Drogheda on Sunday (2pm).

The game this Sunday is due to be refereed by Derek Fahy (Longford) who referred Sligo and Roscommon last weekend, and was mentioned in most reports from that game as he gave a penalty against Philip Greene, the Sligo keeper for alleged barging with the ball.
