Corinthians posted their first victory in the the Ulster Bank League this season on a 20-12 scoreline against Nenagh on Saturday.

Corinthians were ahead 10-7 at the break, courtesy of a James Procter try, and a conversion and penalty from fullback Simon Keller, while the hosts grabbed an intercept try from centre John Long.

Kilkerrin proved too strong for Claregalway in the senior ladies county final at Corofin on Saturday evening, winning by 3-15 to 0-9. The winners had grabbed an early stranglehold on the game, and although Claregalway kept plugging away with some fine efforts throughout the field, they trailed at the break by 0-13 to 0-6.

The annual u-15 BI Post-Primary Schools Inter-Regionals starts on Friday and continues until Sunday in three venues in the city -  NUIG Kingfisher, Colaiste Iognaid, and St Mary’s College gyms where the best players from all nine schools' regions from 32 counties will compete in this competition.

When I played with the Corofin seniors from 1989 until 2004, we had a fairly good team, with Michael and Aidan Donnellan, Martin McNamara, Trevor Burke, Eddie Steede, Gerry Burke and Derek Reilly as good as any club player in the country.

Yet, that squad found it difficult to put together back-to-back county titles, and only managed two-in-a-row once - in 1997 and 1998.

Premier league basketball returns to Galway on Saturday

SSE Airtricity Moycullen host their first home game in their return to basketball's premier division when UCD Marian travel to the Kingfisher for Saturday's second round fixture (7pm).

Moycullen will be looking to improve on their opening night performance which they lost to Killester by 72-64, but it was a game Moycullen will feel they left behind as a result of poor execution at times on offence, sloppy turnovers, and the inability to control their defensive boards.
