Ionbha, The Empathy Book of Ireland, is due to be launched in Charlie Byrnes on Friday November 11.
Edited by Cillian Murphy, Pat Dolan, Gillian Brown and Mark Brennan, the book is a collection of poems, essays, and thoughts with over 80 contributors. Its opening is provided by Cillian Murphy, who is a patron of the UNESCO Child and Family Research Centre at the University of Galway. Murphy uses his chapter to discuss how he became a patron, why he thinks empathy education is so critical, and his own experience of empathy particularly within the context of being a father and an actor.

Homelessness and housing charity Galway Simon Community has warned that it is highly concerned that the number of families and children homeless across the West of Ireland is continuing to spiral upwards. The charity attributes the continuing rise to multiple factors which are culminating into what can best be described as ‘a terrible perfect storm.’
The latest figures released by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government reveal there were 95 families including 209 children living in Emergency Accommodation across Galway, Mayo and Roscommon in September, an increase of 39% on the previous year.

Well-known Galway sportsman Ollie Keogh was the victim of an unprovoked attack in the family home in August 2022. Ollie suffered life threatening injuries which left him in the Intensive Care Unit of University College Hospital. He will be off work as a self-employed musician for the foreseeable future and is faced with considerable medical costs.
Ollie was a very talented footballer from a great Galway sporting family. He had trials with Leeds United with a youngster before going on to score eleven goals in eighty seven appearances in the League of Ireland with Galway United.

Patrick Mac Donncha, owner of Connemara Catering, has said that due to the “insufficient” payment from the Department of Social Welfare, it is no longer possible for him to provide the hot meals service to DEIS Schools in Connemara.
The cost of covering the school meals for over 1,000 pupils in Connemara across 15 schools, has been traditionally covered by the Department of Social Welfare, a payment which has not changed since 2003 and is now deemed insufficient.
