AirSpeed Telecom wins contract to provide back-up network for BreastCheck

AirSpeed Telecom, the telecommunications company which operates a nationwide licensed wireless radio transmission network, has been awarded a three-year contract to provide a back-up network for BreastCheck, the national breast cancer screening service.

BreastCheck provides free breast x-rays (mammograms) to women aged 50 to 64 years on a two yearly cycle. The National Cancer Screening Service, which runs BreastCheck, has contracted AirSpeed Telecom to provide a resilient back-up network to support its screening service.

I brought her a bag of apples on our first ‘date’. Not very romantic, I hear you say. True. And not very generous. Also true (Tesco special offer – one pound for a ‘family bag’). I was merely continuing a tradition. She was Anne Gregory and during her childhood at Coole Park, “every year John Quinn, Grandma’s great friend in New York, used to send a great case of apples to us.” So it is recorded in Anne’s beautiful book Me and Nu, Childhood at Coole. ‘Nu’ was Anne’s sister, Catherine. If you haven’t read Me and Nu, treat yourself to a copy for the New Year. It is still in print after nearly 40 years.

The Pope’s children are 30. As 2009 dawns it will be 30 years since the Pope went around the Racecourse in Ballybrit and told the young people of Ireland that he loved them. But the young people at Ballybrit were not the Pope’s children. The young people of Ballybrit in 1979 are anything from 45 to 55 now. They were well able to cheer and clap and sing loudly in 1979. The Pope’s children are a different generation.

Connolly slams lack of tree preservation policy at city council

The absence of a tree preservation and replacement policy at the Galway City Council is of great concern and is detrimental to the city’s green enviroment.

That is the opinion of city councillor Catherine Connolly who said the recent decision by the council to cut down four mature beech and chestnut trees at the entrance to Wellpark Grove on the Monivea Road highlighted in a very acute way the absence of a tree preservation and/or replacement policy in the city.

Garda division changes to come into effect next week

Galway’s two Garda divisions will be united into a single Galway division from Thursday under administrative changes being introduced under the Policing Plan.

Galway has traditionally been divided into two Garda divisions — Galway West, overseen from Galway Garda Station, and Galway East/Roscommon, administered from Ballinasloe. The new division will follow local authority boundaries and will bring the county under the administration of a single divisional office.
