A local action committee is urging businesses, clubs, organisations and individuals to take part in a “Hands Around Our Hospital” protest aimed at highlighting concerns over future services at Portiuncula Hospital.
The event takes places at the 197-bed Ballinasloe facility on Tuesday at 1.30pm amid growing fears that the county hospital may suffer as the health cuts continue to bite.

The College of Engineering and Informatics at NUI Galway has announced details of a special entrance maths examination which will give students a second chance to pursue a career in engineering. The exam, which takes place on Wednesday August 25, is for students who achieve the CAO points for an undergraduate engineering degree course at NUI Galway but who have not met the obligatory maths requirement.

Today an exhibition by talented photographer Edward Lee will begin in Galway city library running until Monday August 30.
As well as being a successful photographer Lee is also a writer and painter originally from Dublin, but now living in Galway. This is his first photography exhibition. He has exhibited his paintings in many venues in Dublin and Galway, with many of his works in private collections. His photographs have appeared in magazines on both sides of the Atlantic. He is currently working on two photography collections "Lying Down With The Dead" and "Naked". His poetry and short stories have appeared in magazines in Ireland, England, America and Canada. His debut poetry collection, Playing Poohsticks On Ha'Penny Bridge, was published last year by Spider Press.

A Galway consultant has criticised the deportation of a seriously ill Nigerian woman describing it as a death sentence.
The 30-year-old woman and her two-year-old daughter were removed from the State on July 15 after the Minister for Justice, Dermot Ahern, signed a deportation order in May. The deportation went ahead despite pleas by her doctor and lawyers that she be allowed to remain in the State for treatment for cancer.
