Major meeting on family history takes place this weekend

The Western Family History Association will host the Seminar on Irish Genealogy 2010 in the Claregalway Hotel on Saturday.

The seminar will be addressed by Nora Keohane Hickey, chair of the Clans of Ireland; Joan Sharkey of the Irish Family History Society; and Paddy Waldron of the Clare Roots Society and the Council of Irish Genealogical Organisations.

Mermaid Elaine leads the way for Alzheimer’s cause

In aid of the West of Ireland Alzheimer’s Foundation, Elaine Mellett, manager of the Coast Club Leisure Centre with six others is set to undertake a swim across Galway Bay, from the shores of Ballyvaughan to the shores of Furbo — a distance of 13km, landing at the Connemara Coast Hotel on Sunday next August 29.

While the swimmers are crossing the bay, back at the Coast Club Leisure Centre ten runners and nine rowers will, in relays cover the distance by road from Ballyvaughan to Furbo (62km) – the combined efforts dubbed a “Coastathon”.

City Hall denies ‘cover up’ allegation over explosion

City Hall has condemned accusations by Fine Gael councillor Pádraig Conneely that there has been a “cover up” over the minor explosion which caused City Hall to be closed for a number of days in June.

A water boiler cylinder exploded in City Hall on June 11 after which a report into the incident was ordered. However three months after the blast the report remains unpublished.
