Galway launch for new book on Cuba

A new book on terrorist attacks against Cuba will receive its Galway launch in The Western Hotel, Prospect Hill at 8pm next Wednesday.

Voices from the Other Side; An Oral History of Terrorism against Cuba by Canadian journalist Keith Bolender, examines the history of terrorism since the earliest days of the revolution, through interviews with more than 75 individuals who have suffered directly or have had friends or relatives killed.

Fahey criticises NERA for ‘zealous approach’ to regulation

The “zealous approach” being taken by National Employment Rights Agency officers to enforcing regulations must be relaxed according to Fianna Fáil Galway West TD Frank Fahey.

Dep Fahey said he has been contacted by local businesses in the hospitality and manufacturing industries in Galway which are “very concerned” about what they feel is “the unnecessarily zealous approach” being taken by some NERA officers in the enforcement of regulations.

Mermaid Elaine leads the way for Alzheimer’s cause

In aid of the West of Ireland Alzheimer’s Foundation, Elaine Mellett, manager of the Coast Club Leisure Centre with six others is set to undertake a swim across Galway Bay, from the shores of Ballyvaughan to the shores of Furbo — a distance of 13km, landing at the Connemara Coast Hotel on Sunday next August 29.

While the swimmers are crossing the bay, back at the Coast Club Leisure Centre ten runners and nine rowers will, in relays cover the distance by road from Ballyvaughan to Furbo (62km) – the combined efforts dubbed a “Coastathon”.
