Pedestrian injured in city centre hit and run

A young man was injured when he was struck by a car in Market Street in the early hours of Sunday.

Gardaí are treating the accident, which happened between 3.15am and 3.30am, as a hit and run and have appealed to witnesses to come forward. It is believed the car involved in the incident was a gold Toyota Avensis, and the driver of this car is asked to contact the gardaí.

The Western Veteran and Vintage Motor Club Galway is embarking on a major new charity event - a display of vintage and classic cars, tractors, and motorcycles this Saturday at Claregalway Corporate Park.

Treacy welcomes farm pensions move

Dep Noel Treacy has this week welcomed the move to rescind the withdrawal or reduction of the contributory old age pension from people who had availed of commercial partnership agreements.

Minister Ó Cuív has moved to restore the State Pension (Contributory) to women who have worked on family farms in partnership with their husbands following the withdrawal of their contributory pensions at the end of 2009.

I ráiteas atá eisithe ag Conradh na Gaeilge gabhann siad buíochas le gach duine a raibh baint acu agus a ghlac páirt in imeachtaí Sheachtain na Gaeilge agus i Rith 2010. Dúirt siad go raibh clár na bliana seo ar an bhféile ba mhó a eagraíodh riamh agus go raibh buíochas ag dul do na céadta duine mórthimpeall chathair agus chontae na Gaillimhe a chuaigh i mbun imeachtaí a eagrú ina gceantar féin. Ghabh siad buíochas freisin lena heagraíochtaí agus na scoileanna ar fad a ghlac páirt sa tseachtain. “Is ar an gcomhoibriú agus ar an gcomhpháirtíocht seo atá todhchaí na Gaeilge ag brath” a deir an ráiteas. Bhí tábhacht faoi leith freisin, dar le Conradh na Gaeilge, leis an tacaíocht a fuarthas óna meáin chumarsáide.

Dúirt Gearóidín Ní Ghioballáin, bainisteoir tograí le Gaillimh le Gaeilge, “Is maith le turasóirí an Ghaeilge a fheiceáil in úsáid i saol laethúil na cathrach. Cuireann sé go mór lena gcuairt agus lena gcuid measa ar Ghaillimh mar áit speisialta le teacht ar saoire. Is féidir le gnólachtaí atá ag déileáil leis an earnáil turasóireachta buntáiste ar leith a fháil as úsáid na Gaeilge agus táimid ag tnúth le hoibriú leis an earnáil seo chun íomhá dhátheangach na Gaillimhe a neartú.”
