An exhibition featuring works by one of Ireland’s greatest painters Jack B Yeats, as well as works by the Yeats family and their friends, is currently on display in Loughrea.
The Yeats 2015 Exhibition is being held at the Diocesan Museum on the grounds of St Brendan’s Cathedral in Loughrea. On display are original works by Jack Yeats, his wife, Cottie, embroideries by Lily Yeats, and hand coloured prints by Lolly Yeats.

It was a great day for Ciaran Reilly two weeks ago at the National Youth Fly Dressing Championship in Mallow, as the young Loughrea man was crowned Individual All Ireland Champion on the day. It was double joy for Reilly as he also captained Team Connacht to the All Ireland team title by a significant margin.

The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred in 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, which spread over much of the western USSR and Europe. 31 people died directly as a result of the accident.

The latest figures released by the Central Statistics Office have revealed that Loughrea has recorded the biggest year-on-year drop in unemployment in County Galway.
The figures show that Loughrea’s unemployment figure has fallen by 15 per cent or 331 people on last year, meaning there are now 1,865 on the Live Register in the area. However, there has been a month-on-month increase in unemployment of 1.3 per cent.

Thousands of people descended on Salthill on Saturday to support the 10th annual Frances Thornton Memorial Galway Bay Swim in aid of Cancer Care West. The swim, which attracted swimmers from across Ireland, UK, Australia, the US, and Scandinavia, saw some 85 swimmers take to the waters in Co Clare before embarking on the 13km swim across to Blackrock Diving Tower
