FAI Continental Tyres Women’s National League side Galway WFC is delighted to announce Lough Rea Hotel and Spa as their official club sponsors.  The three year deal will see the hotel named as main shirt sponsors on the front and back of the clubs jerseys.  Galway WFC are also announcing that Papa Johns Pizza will become platinum partners of the club.

The shortage of accommodation in Galway has passed crisis point according to Galway West TD Noel Grealish, who has called for sweeping changes to the planning system.

He said the shortage of available places to stay also posed a huge problem for the more than 25,000 students returning to college at NUI Galway and GMIT in the coming weeks.

The programme consists of eight weeks of training that is designed to suit all fitness levels. Galway Civic Trust seeking to connect with Galway emigrants around the world

Do you have a friend or family member from Galway city or county who is now living and working overseas? Or are you a former Galway native reading this from your adopted home abroad? If so, Dúchas na Gailllimhe – Galway Civic Trust wants to hear from you. The heritage organisation is launching an initiative entitled The Galway Tribal Diaspora Project which aims to collect and record the stories of former Galway residents who have gone on to carve out careers or life stories beyond Irish shores.

Project co-ordinator Michael Quinn explains the concept behind the initiative. “The Galway Tribal Diaspora Project seeks to compile pen-portraits of people who previously lived in Galway but have who have moved away from Ireland in order to establish new lives, careers, or opportunities. For centuries Galway people have emigrated to locations all around the world for a variety of reasons, and for many of those their personal stories have been lost. This exciting new venture gives us the opportunity to redress that by connecting with our diaspora and recording their unique stories and experiences.’’

An exciting programme of Galway events is planned to celebrate Heritage Week which  begins on Sunday.

Friends of Merlin Woods is working with many different organisations this year, and it will be the first year of the Community Field School funded by the Heritage Council which begins August 24. Led by archaeologist Martin Fitzpatrick, the two day workshop ‘Introduction to Archaeology‘  will show surveying techniques, identifying archaeological features of Merlin Castle, vernacular buildings, and much more.

More than 120 events are scheduled to take place in Galway during National Heritage Week which runs from Saturday August 22- Sunday August 30. One of the biggest highlights is the return of the immensely popular Loughrea Medieval Festival next weekend. Supermac's creates another one hundred jobs at Kiltullagh Plaza, with more on the way

Galway received a jobs boost yesterday with the announcement by Supermac's founders Pat and Una McDonagh that 100 jobs are to be created at the country's latest motorway service station on the M6 at Kiltullagh. The couple will also employ a further 220 people in the future due to plans for three further plaza developments nationwide over the next two years.

Newcastle residents dismayed at NUIG plans for student residences

A large number of residents in Newcastle have expressed their displeasure at plans by NUI Galway to build additional student residences in the area. The college recently applied for permission to build the accommodation in Upper Newcastle and the proposed development consists of a five-storey block fronted by three four-storey blocks, to house more than 450 students. The residences are to be located between the existing Corrib Village and homes on Upper Newcastle road.

Healy Eames encourages Galway city homeowners to consider letting out a room to students for the college term

Senator Fidelma Healy Eames has encouraged homeowners in the Galway city area to consider letting out a room on a ‘digs’ basis to students for the college term.

“I expect there will be a considerable shortage of available accommodation for students in Galway as they begin the new college year,” Eames said. “Already before the college year has started at all, I am aware of individuals and families who are finding it difficult to source affordable accommodation.
