A feast of student drama

The Irish Student Drama Association Festival, hosted by NUI Galway’s Drama Society, will run in Galway from March 14 - 23 . The 10-day festival will hold 18 productions in five venues throughout the city including The Mick Lally Theatre, An Taibhdhearc, and The Bank of Ireland Theatre NUI Galway.

The programme features a variety of productions, including such classics as Someone Who'll Watch Over Me and The Beauty Queen of Leenane from the NUI Galway Drama Society and Misterman from Queens University’s QU Players.

Hard decisions in approving arts grants to ninety-three groups

A total of 93 groups across Galway are to share in €385,000 in funding this year under the Galway City Council’s Arts Grants 2016 scheme.

The funding, approved by the local authority at its meeting this week, will see grants ranging from €200 to €46,000 going to groups and projects across the city and covering all aspects of the arts in Galway.

Byrne outlines urgent need for channel at Cahermore to be extended

Flooding was on the agenda again at Monday’s meeting of Galway County Council, with Kinvara Councillor Joe Byrne calling for the immediate progressing of the channel in Cahermore. A channel was constructed in the townland between Ardrahan and Kinvara in January during the height of the flooding, but it has been agreed by all that to alleviate South Galway’s flooding issues in the long-term, it needs to be deepened and lengthened.

Galway County Council is currently submitting an application for planning permission to get this work completed. Director of services Liam Gavin said the local authority was currently in discussions with the OPW as to how they could progress the work and the picture is, as yet, unclear.

NUI Galway announce appointment of first ever VP for Equality and Diversity in an Irish university

NUI Galway today announced the appointment of Professor Anne Scott as Vice President for Equality and Diversity. This is the first appointment of its kind in an Irish University.

Professor Scott is currently Executive Dean of the Faculty of Education, Health and Community in Liverpool John Moores University. She has worked as an academic and academic leader in the Scottish, Irish and currently the English Higher Education Systems. She held the post of Head of the School of Nursing and Human Sciences, Dublin City University (2000-2006) where she led the development of BSc, MSc and PhD programmes in the school, in addition to founding and developing a vibrant culture of research and scholarship.
