In just its second appearance, the Ferris wheel in Eyre Square has become a seasonal part of the Galway city skyline, standing at 32 metres high.

The Big Wheel runs from mid-November right up to December 22, and will carry thousands of visitors over the next four weeks.

Search continues for man who went missing in the river

A wide ranging search for a man who went missing in the River Corrib was due to resume in the city this morning. The search, which is now entering its third day, follows reports of a man in the river on Monday morning.

The search, which began shortly after the man was spotted at 9.30am on Monday, has seen the Coast Guard, gardaí, fire services, the RNLI, and Inland Fisheries Ireland scouring the river and its banks for any trace of the man.

The GMIT School of Business will host a public lecture by Ireland’s representative on the European Court of Auditors, Kevin Cardiff, in the Galway campus on Monday next, November 13, 11am to 12 noon.

Mr Cardiff was secretary general of the Department of Finance from 2010 to 2012, overseeing the EU-IMF bank bailout programme. From that experience, he published the book Recap: Inside Ireland’s Financial Crisis. He joined the European Court of Auditors in March 2012 and is Ireland’s sole representative on that body.
