School leavers and mature students who are considering Galway Community College as their further education destination in September 2019 can apply and register online now on all QQI accredited courses. All courses offer a mix of practical and portfolio work and work experience. They are designed as a step towards skilled employment or progression to higher education institutes. There are no CAO points required for further education courses and after completion you can apply for more than 1,200 CAO courses that accept a QQI award for progression purposes.

Mental health problems affect about one in five children and young people. They include depression, anxiety, and conduct disorders, and are often a direct response to what is happening in their lives (Mental Health Ireland). According to the World Health Organisation around 50 per cent of mental disorders begin before the age of 14. Parents have begun to figure this part out themselves. They can unfortunately name on one hand children who needed some form of expert support for their emotional and mental wellbeing in the past 12 months. Parents are more than aware of the daily stories on all media forms of anxious children, crying spells, teenagers suffering migraine, school refusal, depression, bullying, missing youths, self-harming, suicides, violence, poor self-image, eating disorders, and so on.

Where has it gone wrong and with such an alarming acceleration? A fair share of it can be chalked down to today’s children and youth not having resilience skills. Resilience is that ability to bounce back from something that challenges your wellbeing. It is having the capacity to problem solve in a life or a social situation. A simple example of this would be children who have forgotten a school book they need to complete their homework on a given night who, on realising the error and the consequences of it (teacher being disappointed, falling behind in work, etc), set about making a plan to solve their problem such as snapping a friend in the same class and getting the pictures of the pages they need. This is showing resilience. What would not have been an appropriate reaction would be sitting on the floor in tears, refusing to go to school the next day, screaming at family members, etc. This in fact would show no coping skills and would be a key sign that your child needed an intervention.

On Monday August 12 health and wellbeing expert Dorothy Scarry, a qualified primary and secondary teacher, will host a wellbeing and resilience workshop in the Oranmore Lodge Hotel.

The objective of the workshop is to enable students to begin to take ownership of their personal wellbeing and resilience through identifying stressors and establishing a plan for interventions for themselves that they can maintain while they make the school transition and beyond. The practical aspects of starting secondary school, such as dealing with new teachers, timetables, movement between rooms, homework, etc, are also covered in part three of the workshop. Everyone will leave the workshop with a bespoke personal wellbeing plan.

NUI Galway student Róisín McManus is representing Ireland at the major international Future News Worldwide Summit for young journalism students in London this week. This is the second year that an NUI Galway journalism student has been chosen for the summit.

A third year BA with journalism student, Róisín McManus is one of two students selected from Ireland to be a delegate at the prestigious summit, hosted by Thomson Reuters in Canary Wharf in London. She was chosen from more than 3,000 applicants to be one of just 100 delegates from 53 different countries globally at the event.

I was a county gymnast at 19 when my knee swelled up. I could only walk with crutches. Over the next 20 years I had six operations, took heavy painkillers, and was often bed-ridden with pain. After the sixth operation my consultant said, “No more operations, I’m referring you to the rheumatology clinic.”

Prescribed a cocktail of powerful anti-inflammatories, which, despite making me feel very unwell, brought down the swelling dramatically, meant I could dispense with crutches, though I was still in pain.
