Advanced fiction writing classes

AN ADVANCED class for people serious about writing short or long fiction with Galway writer Susan Millar DuMars takes place in September.

The classes take place on Fridays, starting September 19, from 2pm to 4pm, and runs for eight weeks. The maximum number students is five and classes will be held at 3 Carbry Road, Newcastle.

THE 2014 Over The Edge New Writer of The Year competition is seeking entries and is open to poets and fiction writers worldwide.

The total prize money is €1,000, with the best fiction entry winning €300; the best poetry entry winning €300; and the overall winner receiving an additional €400 and a slot as a featured reader at Over The Edge in 2014/15, and a hamper of books from Kenny’s Bookshop.

TOM DUDDY, who was taken far too soon by cancer in June 2012, is one of those poets whose work is not as well-known as it should be; though those familiar with Duddy’s poetry hold it in the highest regard.

Tom lectured in philosophy at NUI Galway for many years and was the author of a substantial study of the Irish contribution to philosophy, A History of Irish Thought. For much of his life Tom read and wrote poetry almost in secret. He was a little nervous that his fellow philosophers might see poetry as a frivolous activity when set against the admittedly serious business of working out the meaning of human existence.

Talking books: A service Galway can be proud of

IN 1974, Galway County Libraries set up a service for the blind and visually impaired to allow them enjoy the benefits of the library. It was modelled on one already provided by the National Council for the Blind and Galway remains the only public library in Ireland to provide it. It is totally free of charge.

HUGO HAMILTON, the author of acclaimed novel, The Speckled People, will read at this year’s Cúirt literature festival.

Hamilton - along with fellow Dubliner Roddy Doyle - will read from his new book, Every Single Minute, in the Town Hall Theatre on Thursday April 10 at 8.30pm. Published in February, the book details Hugo’s trip to Berlin with his friend Nuala O’Faolain, who passed away only 10 days after their holiday.
