A man remains in a stable condition at University Hospital Galway following a stabbing incident in the Westside area of the city in the early hours of yesterday morning.
The man, who is believed to be in his 30s, was rushed to UHG, and is now being treated in the intensive care unit of the hospital following the incident, which is believed to have occurred at around 7am yesterday at a house in the Claremont Park Estate.
As part of an immediate investigation gardaí sealed off five houses in the estate, and at around 9am a city man, also thought to be in his 30s, was arrested and brought to Mill Street Garda Station where he was held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
At 3pm yesterday gardaí leading the investigation decided to extend the suspect’s detention by a further six hours.
Forensic units carried out a technical examination of the scene yesterday while detectives questioned the suspect in Mill Street Garda Station.
At the time of going to print the man was still being questioned in Mill Street Garda Station.
The victim had left a trail of blood on the path outside the house and neighbours were shocked at the nature of the attack.
Despite the Galway courts hearing a number of cases relating to the possession and brandishing of knives this year, actual stabbing incidents in the city and county are quite rare.
However in July this year a Polish national appeared before Galway District Court charged in connection with a stabbing in Tirellan Heights on the Headford Road.
Earlier this year a Portuguese man was charged with assault following an incident in which two men were injured following a glass attack in Gort while last summer a Chinese man was stabbed in the stomach following a row in the city centre.
