Cannabis found in man’s room at Fairgreen Hostel

A homeless man put his hostel accommodation in jeopardy when cannabis to the value of €250 was found in his room.

The resident of Cope Fairgreen Hostel appeared before Judge Liz Healy at Galway District Court, charged with possession of cannabis and a separate public order offence.

The defendant was serving a four-month suspended sentence, suspended for one year, at the time of the public order offence, which took place at Eyre Square on April 3 last. He received the suspended sentence on July 21 2025, and this new offence is a triggering one, which means the suspended four-month sentence may have to be served along with any new sentence imposed. Consideration of this matter was adjourned until the June 15 sitting.

He was found highly intoxicated at Eyre Square and acted aggressively towards Gardaí, and was arrested.

John Martin, solicitor (defending ), said his client was 42 and a plasterer by trade. Alcohol, he said, had got a grip of him. He had been doing quite well, clean and sober, but, unfortunately, he’d slipped back.

The defendant has been in custody since May 20, as he was unable to meet the conditions of bail given.

Judge Healy said she noted that he was pleading guilty to the offences and accepting responsibility for his actions but she couldn’t ignore his behaviour towards the Gardaí who had a difficult enough job to do without this kind of behaviour.

Sentencing was adjourned until June 15.
