Date set for hearing over allegations of threats and demands for welfare money

A city man is to come before a September sitting of Galway District Court charged with threatening violence when attempting to take a social welfare payment from a victim who had just collected it.

Judge John King was told that it was believed by investigating Gardaí that the matter related to a drug debt.

It is alleged that when the injured party left the social welfare office at Bohermore he was challenged by the defendant in a threatening manner over money owed. Violence was threatened.

The injured party is in his thirties, the Judge was told, and he accepted jurisdiction to have the case heard at Galway District Court.

The defendant is pleading not guilty to the charge. A hearing date of September 15 was for the case and the Court was told that it was estimated the hearing would last one hour.
