Gardaí dealing with crash abused by drunk

A man who should have minded his own business, according to his solicitor, interfered with Gardaí dealing with a traffic accident and the result was his appearance before Judge John King at Galway District Court charged with public order offences.

The Court heard that on May 16 last at Siobhán McKenna Road, Gardaí were dealing with a serious traffic accident when Kenneth Goby, 28, Gaelcarraig Park, Newcastle turned up in a highly intoxicated state and began abusing them. He shouted abuse and was arrested.

Judge King said that Gardaí had enough to do dealing with a serious road accident without the likes of the defendant interfering with them as they did their work.

Goby has 23 previous convictions, including for public order, illegally entering a building and assault.

Michael Cunningham solr. (defending ) said his client had brought the charges he faced on himself. If he had minded his own business, he wouldn’t have been arrested in the first place.

He was 43, on disability and on a methadone programme.

The defendant is in custody for other matters. He had three further charges he faces transferred to the Circuit Criminal Court.

Judge King imposed a four-week sentence on the public order charges.
