Man allegedly placed dud £800 on bets

A man who allegedly placed a series of bets on soccer matches using counterfeit sterling notes is to have his case heard early in the New Year at Galway District Court.

Charged with a number of offences Declan Ward, 29, Cooke’s Terrace, Bohermore, currently in custody on unrelated matters, Judge Fiona Lydon was told, made the allegedly fraudulent bets at a BoyleSports outlet in the city.

The Court heard that on January 21 last, Ward entered the betting shop and placed a £100 bet. He returned the following day, January 22, and placed another bet of £400 and returned again the next day, January 23, and placed a £300 bet. The bets were accepted at the time.

It transpired that Boyle Sports had accepted forged sterling notes from the defendant. When they discovered the forgeries the Gardaí were contacted and Ward was identified via the betting shop’s CCTV footage.

Judge Fiona Lydon accepted jurisdiction in the case and fixed the January 19 sitting for its return before her. Legal aid was granted to the defendant.

The Court was not made aware if it would be alleged that Ward profited by winning on any of his bets.
