Unwanted advances led to physical assault, it is alleged

A man who is alleged to have physically assaulted a young woman and pestered her while they were socialising outdoors in Galway last summer will come before the local court again on Monday next.

It is alleged he touched his victim and became violent when his advances were rejected, pushing her off a wall and hitting her in the face with a bottle.

Galway District Court heard how it is alleged Raymond Stewart, Drumaveg, Moycullen, joined the injured party and her friends as they were drinking outdoors on July 5 last. He touched the woman and was told to stop but continued to tell her how good-looking she was and was told to stop again.

The Judge was told he then threw a bottle of port at her, hitting her on the cheek with it. He went on to push her off a wall they were sitting on and she fled to the Garda Station where she reported the incidents.

Garda Sgt Damien Prendergast said that the victim was visibly shaken when she arrived at the station to make her complaint. He presented photographs of the injures suffered by the victim to Judge Lydon.

Judge Lydon asked if the victim had fully recovered and was told that she had physically recovered but emotionally she was “still extremely raw”.

The case was adjourned until next Monday’s sitting of the Court.
