Minister Hildegarde Naughton has confirmed with the HSE that planning should be lodged for the new Galway Hospice next year. This comes after engagement between Minister Naughton and the CEO of the HSE, Bernard Gloster. The new building will be based in the Brothers of Charity facility in Ballybane.

She said that she has been engaged in discussions with the CEO of the HSE for some time now in relation to the proposed new Galway Hospice and that he has confirmed that the Galway Hospice project has now been formally aligned with the recently published Department of Health strategic framework approval process, “ the Minister said.

“The next step in the project’s development is to procure a Design Team and the tender documentation for this is being finalised. It is expected to go to tender in early November and have the Design Team appointed in early 2026. After the design is finalised, Mr. Gloster informs me that it is hoped to get the project to planning as soon as possible thereafter,” the Minister indicated.

“Since initial planning was rejected back in 2019, much work has been done locally to get us to this position and I would like to sincerely thank Mary Nash, CEO ,and the Board of Galway Hospice for the huge amount of work involved. Every family in Galway is affected by terminal illness to some degree and the work that the Hospice does cannot be overstated,” the local TD said.

“Thanks must also go to the Brothers of Charity and Tony Canavan, Regional Executive Officer, HSE West and North West, for their efforts in facilitating Galway Hospice to expand its service,” the Minister commented.

“Hospice staff and volunteers throughout Ireland provide tireless, and often unseen, work every day. None of us know if or when we will need hospice care, which provides comfort and dignity to thousands of families whose loved ones need end-of-life care or are dealing with life-limiting conditions, and it will always be a privilege to assist them.”
