Music for Galway’s 44th International Concert Season Breathe continues with its annual Emily Anderson Concert on Tuesday November 11 in the opulent surroundings of the Hardiman Ballroom in the heart of Galway. The programme includes arias and duets from Mozart’s most popular operas, performed by the immensely talented singers of the Irish National Opera Studio accompanied by their pianist Adam McDonagh.

Each year, in partnership with the University of Galway, Music for Galway honours that most extraordinary Galwegian Emily Anderson by dedicating one of their season concerts to her memory. One of Anderson’s main claims to fame is the editing and translating of the complete letters of both Mozart and Beethoven (including the letter quoted above ).

MfG therefore programmes music by Mozart and Beethoven on alternate years. This year is the turn of Mozart, and in line with the season’s theme celebrating breathing, a vocal concert will showcase this man’s unique genius.

Mozart broke entirely new ground with his unbelievably tuneful and entertaining operas; their success was immediate and sustained. In this concert, audiences can enjoy some of the most famous numbers from a variety of his operas – including the page Cherubino’s two arias on new-found puppy love from “The Marriage of Figaro” and Don Giovanni’s outrageously seedy attempts to seduce a peasant woman on her wedding day. Strong women are to the fore with Fiordiligi’s aria “Come Scoglio – Like a Rock” from “Così fan tutte” and Sesto’s momentous aria “Parto, parto” from The Clemency of Titus, set in Ancient Rome. These arias test the limits of the human voice with their extreme virtuosity and miraculous lyricism.

The performers are the recently-selected young singers at the studio of Irish National Opera in Dublin whose talent will dazzle and amaze you from start to finish. A mix of Irish and international voices, including the baritone David Kennedy from Eyrecourt in East Galway, they are enjoying a range of activities and performances as part of their programme at INO.

This truly unique and unmissable event will also include short talks by computer scientists Dave Pope and Jennifer Conlon about Emily Anderson’s code-breaking techniques and her wonderfully mathematical mind.

Standard tickets are reasonably priced at €22, with concession for over 66 at €19.80. Solidarity tickets are available at €11 and the MfG Friend rate is €18. Tickets can be purchased online at www.musicforgalway.ie or by phone 091 705962.
