The Galway branch of Catherine Connolly’s grassroots presidential campaign has commenced a whirlwind schedule of fundraising events, with rumours of celebrities circulating.
On Tuesday, the Town Hall Theatre was packed for a special screening of Bernadette Devlin: Notes on a Political Journey, and last night, Wednesday, a table quiz was held in the city centre.
This Sunday, September 21, the Campaign for Connolly will host an autumn equinox evening ramble on the Knockma woodlands walk, with participants to meet at 4.30pm in the carpark.
A ‘Ceol for Catherine’ event is planned for later this month, with a number of local musicians expected to perform, and Mary Coughlan rumoured to headline. A late night dance event will be announced for early October, with DJ Shampain anticipated to be the main draw.
Connolly, an independent TD for Galway West, and one of only three confirmed candidates for the presidency so far, expressed her disappointment this week that TG4 will not host a presidential debate as Gaelige.
She told reporters this week she would be “delighted” if Sinn Féin supports her bid, when it clarifies its stance this weekend, but at time of going to press, the Galway Advertiser understands her campaign has received no formal contact from Sinn Féin leader, Mary Lou McDonald.
Deputy Connolly currently has the backing of the Social Democrats, Labour, People Before Profit, Solidarity and some fellow independents.
