Anticipation is building as the largest ever entry prepares to run 39th edition of the Blackrock Health Galway Clinic Streets of Galway 8k this weekend.
"Given the resurgence in running, it is no surprise the event has sold out with our largest entry to date and a capacity 3,500 runners of all abilities taking to The Streets" says Race Director Brian Bruton.
The route starts at 7pm sharp at GTI on Father Griffin Road before going through the historical city centre, passing Wolfe Tone Bridge, Merchants Road, Eyre Square, crossing the River Corrib at The Cathedral, passing the University of Galway and University Hospital Galway before they race toward Salthill via Dr Mannix Road. The athletes will enter The Promenade at Leisureland before a fast finish along Gratton Road and South Park into the finish at Nimmo’s Pier where GCH hospitality and after race refreshments await.
A stellar field has been assembled including the likes of internationals John Travers of Donore, William Fitzgerald of Craughwell, marathon winners Chris Jeuken and Jake O'Regan on the Men's side and Niamh Allen of Leevale, Emily Sisson - a USA athlete - and Aoife Kilgannon of Sligo AC.
Among the 3,500 race entrants are three athletes completing the race for the 39th time and people from all walks of life in Galway, and beyond. The event attracts national and international visitors and large crowds of spectators are expected across the 8km route.
There are age category prizes available and there is a beautiful souvenir Streets of Galway Hi-Tech T-shirt for all on-line entrants.
Race HQ is at the Claddagh Hall, Nimmo’s Pier, Galway (H91 A6Y6 ). The race starts promptly at 7pm on Saturday.
The race is AAI certified and permitted and is a sell out.
