Derby day comes at a good time for United women

Galway United Women will bounce into the Connacht Derby on Saturday after their best performance of the season. They blitzed Shamrock Rovers to advance to the semi-final of the All-Island Cup.

Ceola Bergin led the charge, chasing down Summer Lawless in the opening seconds. Her block ended up in the net for a dream start.

Playing in an attacking formation with Doherty and Olusola, Bergin made it two from a corner mid-way through the first. She was instrumental also in putting the result beyond doubt. The goal was credited as an own goal for the goalkeeper, but the Galway view was that Bergin deserved the hat-trick.

It was an incredible return on a first start since April, and there were plenty of other eye-catching performances. Niamh Farrelly was outstanding in midfield, battling tigerishly but showing quality when on the ball.

Full-backs Aoibheann Costello and Therese Kinnevey were solid and energetic. The latter made some key interventions with the game still in the melting pot.

There is some focus on the transfer window and how it will impact the team. Jodie Griffin was a notable departure, having made 11 appearances this season. Shauna Fox and Rachel Kearns have also left in recent weeks.

To date, Aoibhín Donnelly, a former underage star with Galway WFC, has been the only confirmed addition. There is some justified excitement about what the ex-Cork City winger will bring. After last Saturday’s game, Phil Trill confirmed he would be looking to make another one or two additions.

Regardless of who arrives and when, United will be expected to have enough for Bit O’Red even if they have been strengthening themselves. It has always been tight between the teams but United have always come out on the right side in competitive fixtures.

Sligo’s form has been bleak this season though, with only one win in 15 games in all competitions. Historically, they have managed to raise their game for Galway and as such will be treated with caution.

Nonetheless, it is an undoubted opportunity to continue the positive momentum for United who will face Wexford in a home semi-final of the All-Island Cup at the end of the month.
