Craughwell Athletic Club officially launched the 2025 Galway Women's Mini Marathon on Saturday, January 11.
The event will take place on Monday, February 3, and the club is inviting all women to run, jog or walk 10km around the countryside of Craughwell. The Galway Women's Mini Marathon is the sole 'women only' running event in Galway and hopes to build on the 620 women that took part in 2024.
Every runner will receive a medal, beanie hat, and goodie bag.
The Galway Athletics County Board are supporting the running event with proceeds going towards the development of facilities for Craughwell Athletic Club. Galway Sports Partnership are also supporting the event through the 'Women in Sport' funding from Sport Ireland.
"This event is a fantastic opportunity for women of all ages and fitness levels to come together, celebrate their achievements, and promote a healthy, active lifestyle," said Lorraine Treacy of Galway Sports Partnership.
"The Galway Women's Mini Marathon is more than just a race. It's a celebration of community spirit, empowerment, and the incredible strength of women. We are proud to be part of an event that encourages participation, fosters camaraderie, and highlights the importance of physical activity for overall well-being," added Treacy.
The Galway Women's Mini Marathon have partnered with FabLittleBag to provide easily disposable period product bags. The marathon will also provide free period products in all portaloos as the event strides to break down barriers to participation.
Anna Grealish, Women in Sport Lead for Athletic Ireland, said that the Galway Women's Mini Marathon providing free period products "takes away the worry" about being on your period at the event.
"Periods can be a barrier to participation and this small positive step can help. If a participant needs a spare tampon, unexpectedly gets their period or if those teenage girls taking part start their first period, having products in the portaloos is amazing," said Grealish.
