As part of European Mobility Week (September 16-22 2021 ), Galway City Council is rolling out a range of initiatives to support the people of Galway to ‘Move Sustainably, Stay Healthy’.
Initiatives progressing this September include: a bike maintenance stand pilot in Eyre Square, Blackrock, Westside Library, and Lough Atalia; providing scooter and bike parking in eight schools; footpath renewals in locations including Forster Street, Eyre Street, Fr Griffin Road, Munster Avenue, and Fairhill Road; and commissioning new pedestrian crossings at Henry Street, Bóthar Stiofáin and Parkmore West. These projects are funded by the National Transport Authority.
Speaking on behalf of Galway City Council, Uinsinn Finn, Acting Director of Services said the theme of European Mobility Week 2021 is ‘Safe and Healthy with Sustainable Mobility’, paying tribute to the hardships felt by Europe – and the world – throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.
.
“Galway City Council is supporting active and sustainable travel through the implementation of the Galway Transport Strategy, with a number of significant projects currently being progressed, including the Salmon Weir Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge; Active Travel/ Cycle Network routes; BusConnects Galway Cross-City Link (University Road to Dublin Road, and BusConnects Galway: Dublin Road. These projects will support the people of Galway, and those visiting the city, to choose more active and sustainable transport options as they move through the city,” he said.
This year European Mobility Week recognises the benefits of active and sustainable travel. Being physically active on foot or by bike can help reduce blood pressure, cholesterol levels and weight which can in turn help to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. All movement can help your mood, reduce stress and improve self-esteem. Getting active in green or blue space has added mental health benefits.

Galway City Council, in collaboration with the National Transport Authority, is commencing an 18 month trial for the provision of bike repair and maintenance stands in Galway City. The purpose of the trial is to explore the suitability of different models of stands for use in Galway City, and also the best locations for the stands to get maximum use.
