Will 212 be the turning point for motor industry?

The Irish motor industry is said to be optimistic for the new 212 registration plate period, which commenced on July 1.

Brian Cooke, the SIMI director general, says it will hopefully be a turning point for the industry.

"Retailers are optimistic they can recover some of the sales lost during the first half of the year, ” he says.

The month of June saw 2,767 new cars registrations compared to 1,006 in June 2020 and 1,408 in June 2019. Meanwhile 63,867 new cars have been registered year to date compared to 52,885 for the same period in 2020 (up 21 per cent ) and 80,758 in 2019 ( down 21 per cent ), according to figures released today by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry.

Last month 5,631 used cars were imported, compared with 4,263 imports in June 2020, a decrease on the 8,060 imports in June 2019. Year to date used imports are up 57 per cent (35,754 ) on 2020 (22,787 ) and down 33 per cent on 2019 (53,126 ).

For the month of June, 390 new electric vehicles were registered compared to 42 in June 2020. So far this year 4,333 new electric cars have been registered in comparison to 1,889 on the same period 2020.

Electric vehicle and plug-in hybrids and hybrids continue to increase their market share, with their combined market share now just under 30 per cent. Diesel accounts for 36 per cent and petrol the remainder.

The top selling car in June 2021 was the Hyundai Tucson, followed by the Toyota Corolla, Rav 4, Volkswagen Tiguan, and Skoda Octavia. Toyota was last month’s best selling car brand, with Volkswagen, Hyundai, Skoda and Ford making up the top five.

Elsewhere, light commercial vehicles (LCV ) have increased by 992 registrations compared to June last year (569 ) and 747 for the same month in 2019. Year to date 17,027 new LCVs were registered, an increase on last year’s 10,569 (+ up 61 per cent ) and on 15,317 in 2019 (up 11 per cent ).

Heavy goods vehicles (HGV ) have seen 102 registrations in June when compared to 100 in June 2020 and 316 in June 2019. Year to date HGV registrations total 1,527 compared with 1,199 in 2020 (27 per cent ) and 1,803 in 2019 (15 per cent ).
