Mullingar residents praised for trouble-free Hallowe’en

Residents’ associations in Mullingar have paid tribute to all who contributed to the peaceful celebrations in the town over the Hallowe’en period.

Chairman of Mullingar West Community Council, Fergal Hegarty, said this week that he was pleased there had been few or no incidents in Mullingar during the period, in marked contrast to the chaotic scenes in Dublin and a number of other areas across the country.

“Mullingar West Community Council would like to thank all the local residents’ associations and members of the public, both adults and children, who helped to implement the bonfire ban in Mullingar. Their cooperation led to a peaceful and enjoyable Hallowe’en period, unlike the disgraceful scenes in Dublin. No one wants to see these repeated across the country,” said Mr Hegarty, referring to figures from Dublin which revealed that the emergency services were called out 800 times, a number of gardai injured, and significant damage caused to buildings on Hallowe’en night .

Mullingar West Community Council - which takes in the estates of Abbeylands; Ashfield; Ardleigh Vale, Park, Crescent, and Gate; The Moorings; Ardilaun Heights and Green; Green Park and Greenpark Meadows; and Cara Vale and Grove - is calling on the council to continue to implement a complete bonfire ban, in order to ensure Hallowe’en celebrations remain trouble-free in the future.

“I am once again calling on Westmeath County Council to implement a total ban on bonfires, or to regulate bonfires, rather than have a free for all as seen the length and breadth of the country, which brought injury to a number of people.

“We would like to express our sympathy and wish a speedy recovery to the members of the emergency services who were injured in Dublin over Hallowe’en,” concluded Mr Hegarty.
