We talked last week about the bravery of the Army men from Custume Barracks in Athlone at the Siege of Jadotville.

Since then the film has got huge reviews in all of the papers, magazines, and on social media. If you get a chance, please try to see it in a cinema. As all the reviews attest, the film is a far better experience when watched on the big screen rather than on the much smaller Netflix screen. I urge you to find out if there is a cinema near you and if you get an opportunity go to it. You will enjoy it thoroughly and it will remain in your mind as a time of extraordinary valour and bravery.

The event, which was opened by AIT president Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin, brought together over 50 companies across the medtech, biopharma and engineering sector who are actively recruiting for positions.

Contract awarded for €4.6 million upgrade to Athlone Wastewater Treatment Plant

Irish Water has signed a €4.6 million contract to upgrade the Athlone Wastewater Treatment Plant. The contract was awarded to EPS Limited.

Construction is scheduled to begin in November and is expected to take approximately 12 months to complete. This contract forms part of Irish Water’s investment in the wastewater infrastructure in Athlone. A separate project is underway to address deficiencies in the sewerage network in the town and to reduce overflows to the River Shannon and is expected to go to tender next year.

1916 interactive exhibition to take place in Shamrock Lodge

Athlone Community Radio, in conjunction with the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, presents '1916: History Remembered', a one-day interactive exhibition on Saturday, October 1 from 1.30-5.30pm.

The event will feature two performances of a 15-minute play, entitled 1916 - A Bird's Eye View, by Coosan Beechpark Community Games Culture Corner Team, winner of the 2016 All-Ireland competition. The performances will take place at 2pm and 2.45pm.

Cllr O’Rourke welcomes funding to tackle Ardbrae Park flooding

Fianna Fáil councillor, Aengus O'Rourke, has welcomed news that funding will be made available for fixing troublesome waste water pipes in the Ardbrae Park area.

Residents in the area have experienced flooding problems following heavy rainfall for a number of years without any remedy. However, the council will now provide funding in the region of €30,000 to provide those residents will relief.
