Gabrielle McFadden and Paul Daly elected to the Seanad

Former Fine Gael Deputy for Longford-Westmeath, Gabrielle McFadden, has been elected to the Cultural and Educational panel of the Seanad. Ms McFadden learned of her election in the early hours of Tuesday morning when she secured her seat on the 23rd and final count.

A former Mayor of Athlone and Westmeath County Councillor, Ms McFadden was elected to the Dáil in a 2014 by-election, taking her sister Nicky’s seat after the latter’s untimely death. She lost her seat in the Dáil in the recent General Election. Senator McFadden was contesting this election against 24 other candidates. She is one of just five to have secured a position on the Cultural and Educational Panel.

In a presentation to councillors at Monday’s Westmeath County Council meeting, secretary of the board of Athlone Arts and Tourism, Pat Keating, outlined developments at these two facilities, as well as the Abbey Road Artist Studios.

Strong Westmeath participation in GP under-six scheme

There has been a strong uptake of the free care scheme for under sixes among doctors in Westmeath and surrounding counties.

Figures from the HSE reveal that 86 per cent of GPs in Westmeath and Longford have signed up to offer the service, which provides free doctor visits to children under six years of age. This translates to a total of 68 doctors across the two counties.
