Westmeath’s Circuit Court judge has said he is gobsmacked that a State employed witness, who had been summonsed to court, went on holidays instead of attending an Athlone man’s drugs trial earlier this year.

HSE Community Games launches 2014 festival

The 2014 HSE Community Games was launched earlier this week by local musician and former Games participant Bressie.

At the launch in Athlone Castle Gerard Davenport, president of Community Games, presented Bressie with a Community Games gold medal to reward him for all he has done over the years in encouraging people to be more active in their daily lives and also for helping to put the spotlight on mental health.

World War I heroes honoured

Deputy Denis Naughton; Snr Master Sgt Retd Michael Noone; Richard O’Connell, Boston MA; John Cummins, chairperson Roscommon County Council; Frank Turley; Bernie Turley; Master Sgt Retd Ron Howko; Cllr Mary Hoade, mayor of County Galway; Senator Hildegarde Naughton; and Senator Michael Mullins.

Over 200 people gathered in Moore Old Cemetery outside Ballinasloe to honour two brothers who fought in WWI. Cpl Michael O’Connell, Distinguished Service Cross and Purple Heart, was killed on July 23, 1918 while drawing down fire from a German machine gun position during the First World War. Michael’s brother Cpl Martin O’Connell survived the First World War; however his son was killed on the island of Iowa Jima during the Second World War and received the Bronze Star.

Three months for “grossly abusive” businessman

A local garage owner and one-time election candidate avoided going directly to jail this week (July 23) after businessman Noel O’Gara stumped up the €1,500 surety required to appeal the sentence.

Donie Kenny (53), with an address at Carrickobrien, Athlone was sentenced to three months imprisonment after being found guilty of being “grossly abusive” to a garda in the early hours of December 29 when she refused to get him a taxi for his sister.

St Kieran’s Community Centre vandal gets two years detention

A youth co-responsible for the vandalising of St Kieran’s Community Centre last month, as well as the robbery of a dozen laptops from the Gaelscoil, was jailed for a total of two years without remission this week (July 16).

The 15-year-old, who cannot be named because of his age, was given three, consecutive, eight-month sentences for the above two offences, and for his part in an attack on a person’s home in Sarsfield Square on June 2.
