MEP Jim Higgins is a Eurostar

Jim Higgins FG MEP for Ireland North West was today re-elected to the prestigious position of Quaestor of the European Parliament.

Higgins was elected by the 753 MEPs to one of the five positions with an amazing 235 votes. Higgins will continue to be Ireland’s voice on the Bureau of the Parliament, the only Irish MEP in such a position.

This is Higgins’ second consecutive term in the position. Higgins was uncontested in the EPP political group, the largest group in the EP with 262 MEPs and received wide support across all political parties.

“I’m delighted to retain my position, I’ve worked very hard over the past two and a half years and I am honoured that my colleagues have reiterated their support and appreciation of my work.

“Holding such a position is never easy, especially for a candidate from a small member state. My vote not only reflects my standing in the Parliament but also that of Ireland in Europe.”

Speaking directly after the vote Higgins vowed to “continue his work to ensure that the Parliament is as efficient and transparent as possible. The next two and a half years will present many challenges, especially in the run up to the 2014 European Elections.”

“As always my work for the North West comes first, however I have found that my position as Quaestor has actually complemented and assisted my work for the North West and I will ensure that it will continue to do so,” he said.
