Ballintubber 0-8 Castlebar 0-5
As the sun began to set in McHale Park, 'The Boy's from the 'Tubber' was sung with gusto after John Feeney had just collected the Moclair Cup for the first time in the clubs history, by Ballintubber sub Myles Kelly. The game may have been one that won't live long in the memory of the neutral, but it's one that will never be forgotten by anyone from Ballintubber. For a club celebrating it's centenary it was the perfect end to the Mayo championship as they never said die right until the final whistle to hold off the challenge of Castlebar Mitchels and set of celebrations that will go on long into the week ahead.

Last weekend's Donegal Harvest Rally was the final round of the 2010 HASS Border Rally Championship and resulted in success for a number of Mayo competitors. Completing a fine season with second in class on the rally, Ambrose Gaughan and Derek Molloy were the overall winners of class nine on the Border Series. Competing in a Toyota Corolla, the Foxford/Lahardane duo have been a revelation this season in this very competitive category, regularly beating competitors in much more powerful cars.

More trouble in the Rebel County

Seán Óg Ó hAilpín’s departure from the Cork hurling panel has dominated the sports news this week after Dennis Walsh indicated that he would not be included in Cork’s plans for next season. This was a huge decision to make and in one sense I can understand how difficult it must have been for Walsh to make it. There are two schools of thought at play here. Dennis Walsh could have taken the soft option and waited until his time in charge was over, thereby leaving the tough decision to omit the player to the next manager. Nobody would have complained if Seán Óg was kept on the squad to assist with the task of indoctrinating some new faces into a new Cork squad. I do feel he could have done a fine job in this regard.

The showpiece occasion in Mayo football will be tinged with sadness following the recent deaths of Ger Feeney and Donal McEllin. But what better way to honour the memory of the two men than this Sunday’s clash between Castlebar Mitchels and Ballintubber in the county senior final in McHale Park.
The two west Mayo clubs have battled their way through three group games and two knockout clashes to take their place on the field in the final in what is a historic year for each club. Castlebar Mitchels are celebrating their 125th anniversary this year, while the men from Ballintubber are celebrating their club reaching the ripe old age of 100. Castlebar may be old hats at winning senior titles, while Ballintubber are appearing in their first final at this grade, those facts will count for nothing come game time on Sunday.
