Challenge the Greenway

Fri, Jan 06, 2012

Back in 2007 Johnny Oosten came up with an idea. This idea centred primarily around creating awareness and raising vital funds for children with autism in Ireland by means of the Croagh Patrick Seven Day in a Row Challenge. Five years on he has certainly achieved that, having raised more than half a million euro (€534,000) for the cause. (www.croaghpatrickchallenge.com)

March 18 this year will be the date for his next venture - a completely new challenge and a new cause. This new event is a fundraiser to help the Cystic Fibrosis West team raise the much-needed funds required to build a specialised day care unit at Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar. This unit will comprise two isolated en suite bedrooms (each incorporating positive and negative airflow pressure systems), a treatment room, meeting room, kitchenette, laboratory, and a corridor for exercise and bleep tests.

Chambers claims national title in nail biting encounter

Fri, Dec 16, 2011

Last Friday evening Michelle Chambers from Castlebar Boxing Club claimed the 54kg national intermediate title after a nail biting bout with Rosmary Doherty from Carndonagh Boxing Club in Donegal. Chambers got off to a great start with some great overhand rights to Doherty's head, and led at the end of the first round, 5-2. However in the second Doherty produced a great round of long range boxing to keep Chambers away, the score at the end of the second was 6-6. Chambers, now on the back foot, was feeling the pressure, the third round started the same way the second ended with Doherty in the ascendancy.

However Chambers was getting to grips with Doherty's long range tactics, the third ended on a score of 9-9. The fourth and final round was tit for tat, however both boxers were tiring, and the fight was becoming a scrappy affair. The referee cautioned both boxers for holding on a couple of occasions, but he decided to issue a public warning to Chambers with 30 seconds to go in the round, awarding two points to Doherty at that late stage which should have been the nail in Chambers’ coffin. However the Castlebar ace was having none of it, and in the last 10 seconds of the fight, Doherty relaxed, to her detriment. Chambers unleashed a three punch combination that brought her back into contention and afforded her a chance at a third title. Chambers won the title on a deserved 15 - 14 computer score. The coaching staff and all the members of the Castlebar Boxing Club extend their congratulations to Chambers for a fine performance in winning her third national title.

Set piece is a key issue as Connacht head to Gloucester

Fri, Dec 16, 2011

Connacht head to England for Saturday’s return joust with Gloucester knowing an improved performance, particularly in the set piece, is vital to achieve a first Heineken Cup win. Despite earning their first point in Europe’s elite competition last weekend against the English premiership outfit in their 14 - 11 defeat at the Sportsground, Connacht know they let slip another chance to achieve a much-needed win after a run of defeats. Now they travel to Gloucester with hopes that an improved performance up front will provide the backs with sufficient ball to cause their opponents problems. If Connacht do not improve in that area, the Cherry and Whites will simply adopt a 10-man game plan and Connacht will be on the back foot again.
