John and Collette win in Turlough

Parke Keelogues Crimlin GAA in conjunction with Mayo AC, Mayo Mental Health Association, and the National Museum of Country Life hosted the fifth Annual Turlough 8k on Sunday last. Spring sunshine, snowdrops, a few early daffodils, and a bracing wind greeted the 270 plus participants who turned out to participate in the event.

The course looped around the village of Turlough passing the famous Round Tower and included three testing hills before the downhill finish into the village over the last kilometre and on to the finish line in the Museum of Country Life.

Strong showing for Mayo AC in Hollymount

The familiar setting of Hollymount’s main street was the backdrop to the traditional November road race on Sunday afternoon. Bib numbers were collected at the community centre. Warm-ups along the local arteries got the blood going ahead of the task – lungs and legs engaged and put through their gears.

Land of the Giants Duathlon goes from strength to strength

Claremorris will host the Land of the Giants Duathlon for the sixth time on Wednesday December 28. Last year saw a bumper crowd of more than 250 participants, and organisers are expecting even bigger numbers this Christmas.

Mayo AC runners do Ireland proud at Masters

Mayo AC's four representatives on the Irish team did the club proud competing in the 29th annual British & Irish Masters International in Glasgow on Saturday. Masters athletes in five-year age group categories from 35 up to 75 from Ireland, England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland competed in three races.

The event was hosted by Scottish Veteran Harriers Club. The races were over three or four laps of a 2k route at Tollcross Park. The course was over undulating terrain with differing surface conditions at various points and open ground interspersed with sections through mature trees. Real cross country, according to the Mayo team.

Forty nine Mayo AC athletes make the grade in Dublin marathon

Mayo AC had a record 49 finishers in the recent 37th Dublin City Marathon which incorporated the National Marathon Championships. It was a brilliant day for all of them, experiencing the atmosphere generated by large crowds along the course of one of Europe's top city marathons. Sixteen of them completed the 26.2 mile distance for the first time, adding to the excitement of the occasion for the club. It was a perfect day for running with hardly a breeze and temperatures of 12-14C.

Ann Lennon shines in senior provincial cross country

Sligo racecourse at Cleveragh has hosted a number of cross country events over recent years. The racecourse itself is one lap of almost eight furlongs – a mile circuit and there is a wonderful vista across the town to blue ridge hills and beyond to Ben Bulben. As well as an interior grass track alongside the tarmac strip for ambulances during race meetings, there are a number of grassy tracks up and down the slopes. It recently hosted the Connacht senior, masters, and novices championships.

Mayo AC athletes among top finishers at Galway Bay Run

Mayo AC athletes were well represented on the podium after the three races which made up the Galway Bay Run on Saturday October 1.

Congratulations to all the club members who competed and particularly to those who had top three success: Norah Newcombe in 10k, Ann Lennon in the half marathon, and Brendan Hession in the full marathon. In the 10k Norah Newcombe finished third in the women's race in 37:31. Catherine Conway was just behind in fourth in 38:15.

Beat the ground at the Breaffy 10k

The sixth annual Breaffy 10k race takes place on Sunday October 9 at 2.30pm. The race is part of 2016 Mayo AC Vodafone C&C Cellular Club League. The walk/jog/run event is organized by Breaffy Community/Breaffy GAA. This community inspired event is aimed at runners and walkers of all abilities and levels of fitness.

Canty and Gleeson take wins in Claremorris

The 15th Annual De Care Dental Claremorris 8k took place recently. It was also a target race in the 2016 Mayo AC Vodafone C&C Cellular Club League. The 8k race was over a newly measured one lap course starting at Claremorris track, and replaced the five mile route which was used previously and started in the town centre.

Victory for Kathy Gleeson in Irishtown 8k

Kathy Gleeson (Claremorris) was the winner of the fourth annual Padraig Cullina Memorial Irishtown 8k. The race was also a Mayo AC 2016 Vodafone C&C Cellular Club League race and the first of five upcoming Club League 8ks/5mile target races or bonus events, with points to be won by competing Mayo AC club members. The course is one lap starting and finishing near the community centre and has some tough stretches, particularly over the final two kilometres.

24th Balla 10k run and walk coming up

“How time flies” was the comment of Brendan Conwell as he took a break from organising the 24th edition of the famous Balla 10K which is fixed for Saturday evening July 23 at 7pm. The man behind the event since its inception in the early 90s looks back fondly on the many enjoyable but sometimes stressful moments associated with organising a highly successful annual fixture like this.
