Mayo sailing club hosts winter lecture
Fri, Jan 13, 2012
Des McWilliam is one of Ireland’s best-known sail makers. Over the years he has made sails for Round The World racers, Mirrors, circumnavigating cruisers, Ton Cup Winners, Chinese junks, Admiral's Cuppers, Achill Yawls, and Commodore's Cuppers. He founded the business in Crosshaven in 1978, and has been designing, making and repairing sails there ever since. Mayo Sailing Club are hosting a lecture on Sail Trim by Des in GMIT on Thursday January 19 at 7.30pm. Des is a very accomplished sailor in his own right, having represented Ireland in five Admiral's Cups and in regattas from the Southern Cross to the Atlantic Challenge. This talk is aimed at sailors of all craft, from dinghies up to ocean-crossing cruisers, and indeed for anybody who wants to get involved in sailing, this could prove to be a very good meeting place.

It was not exactly back with a bang, but inter-county football was back last weekend for Mayo when they took on and defeated a hard working Leitrim side. January throws up very little in definite road signs for the direction the summer will take, but there were a few new options in route planning on show that will have given both James Horan and the Mayo supporters something to think about in the coming weeks and months.

“It's do or die or whatever other way you want to put,” is how Mayo League manager Michael Hutton described Sunday's Oscar Trainer trophy clash between his Mayo League side and the Sligo/Leitrim League on Sunday in Milebush Park at 2pm. The competition, which kicked off a number of months ago, has only reached its second and final group game stage this weekend, and it is all to do for the Mayo League on Sunday.

Back in 2007 Johnny Oosten came up with an idea. This idea centred primarily around creating awareness and raising vital funds for children with autism in Ireland by means of the Croagh Patrick Seven Day in a Row Challenge. Five years on he has certainly achieved that, having raised more than half a million euro (€534,000) for the cause. (www.croaghpatrickchallenge.com)
March 18 this year will be the date for his next venture - a completely new challenge and a new cause. This new event is a fundraiser to help the Cystic Fibrosis West team raise the much-needed funds required to build a specialised day care unit at Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar. This unit will comprise two isolated en suite bedrooms (each incorporating positive and negative airflow pressure systems), a treatment room, meeting room, kitchenette, laboratory, and a corridor for exercise and bleep tests.
