After a tough and testing campaign, Connacht Rugby’s debut season of Heineken Cup rugby ends when English premiership leaders Harlequins visit the Sportsground this evening (8pm). Connacht, drawn in one of the toughest pools, can reflect on a campaign in which they have attracted considerable plaudits and proved more than able for this elite competition. But it is a win Connacht Rugby and their supporters crave, and tomorrow night Eric Elwood will have his team primed for that task.

Earlier this week the Mayo League announced the five recipients of the 2011/2012 third level scholarships. This initiative which is a first for the Mayo League is something that it hopes to expand in the coming years. The five recipients were Gerry Cunningham (Westport United), John Hutton (Claremorris), Owen McNamara (Conn Rangers), Chris Rowland (Castlebar Celtic), and Gerry Sweeney (Bangor Hibs). The five players will be presented with a cheque for their first instalment of the grant and a specially designed certificate at Milebush Park on Saturday, January 28 at 6.30pm. The Mayo League also thanked all those who applied for the scholarship and Arcon Recruitment, Castlebar, which carried out the interviews on all applicants on behalf of the Mayo League.

Last Sunday at the Woodie’s DIY Masters Indoor Championships, Mayo AC came home with number of medals split between two athletes. In the female over 45 section, Ann Murray won a gold medal in the 3,000 metres and a bronze in the 400 metres. In the men’s over 55 section, Patrick Moran won the gold in the high jump event and took a bronze in the long jump.

Almost as soon as it began the group stages of the FBD League will wrap up this weekend. For Mayo the competition so far can be given good grades. Two wins out of two, a number of new players given their introduction to the inter-county game and a place in the final of the competition against NUIG to look forward to in a week’s time.

Only 60 minutes separates Davitts from making not a little bit of history, but one that will be remembered for as long as the men from the borderline towns of Ballindine and Irishtown play football. On Sunday in Tullamore, one more win and an All Ireland final beckons for the men in black and red next month.
Last year was finally a year when Davitts delivered in the intermediate championship. They were always a team fancied to make the break and always had the potential to do it, but yet they always somehow managed to find a way to come up short.

Andy Moran is on the way back
The inspirational Ballaghaderren man who was on Maor Uisce duties in Ballyhaunis last weekend for the opening round of the FBD League is coming back to fitness. Moran took part in the warm up before the game with a number of other players. Mayo supporters will be hoping to see him back in action again sooner rather than later.

Over the Christmas and New Year period, the club scramble competition was won by the trio of Breege Jennings, Geraldine Evans and Tim Evans. Second place went to the team of Pat Kilgallon, Ciaran Canny and Sean Canny, with third place going to Dermot MacMahon, Pat Mohan and Martin Moylette. Last weekend’s stableford competition was won by PJ Brett with a score of 37. Brett’s play on the back nine kept Martin Moylette back in second place after he also finished on a score of 37, with Aodan McSuibhnie coming home in third place.

The Harlequin Adventure Duathlon will be held on Saturday March 24 with a start time of 9am. This race is a mix of running, cycling and mountain running, very much like the famous Gaelforce event which has proved to be a big hit in the Leenane/Westport area, Now Castlebar can boast about an event of its own with equally as stunning and challenging terrain.

The increasingly popular weekly sessions which cater for all fitness levels from beginners upwards, are an ideal opportunity for people of all ages to improve their health and wellbeing. They take place in a safe sociable environment and at low cost and are open to people over 18, with no upper age limit. All centres have trained team leaders in attendance catering for those who wish to walk, jog, or run or who want to progress from one of those levels to another.
