GMIT to hold two open days on CAO options for secondary school students and parents

A large number of secondary school students from Mayo and around the rest of the country will visit GMIT’s Galway city campuses next week for two Open Days, on Friday, October 18 (9.30am to 3pm) and Saturday, October 19 (10am to 1pm). A full programme of activities and events will take place in the two city campuses, at the Dublin Road campus and the nearby Centre for Creative Arts & Media (formerly called Cluain Mhuire). Events include talks on the range of degree programmes on campus (and live online on www.gmit.ie on 18 October), workshops, demonstrations, exhibitions of student work, a video showcase of graduates’ career paths, campus tours and a range of fun interactive learning activities. Barrett questions county councillors' commitment to jobs

Labour Party, Castlebar Town Councillor Harry Barrett has expressed serious concern at the lack of representation by county council members at a recent trade mission, this week, by a delegation from Ohio, USA. Barrett made his comments after learning that only the Cathaoirleach, Cllr Johnny O' Malley, and one other councillor, turned up to meet the trade delegation in Turlough House, despite the fact that all county councillors were invited to the event.

Mayo MEP backs new tobacco directive

Jim Higgins MEP for the Midlands-North-West (MNW) this week welcomed the European Parliament's decision to vote in favour of the new Tobacco Products Directive. The new Directive, once final negotiations are completed with Member States, will mean a raft of new measures aimed at stubbing the habit out, especially amongst young people.

MEP concerned about increase in road deaths

Jim Higgins MEP has expressed concern at the increased number of fatal road accidents this year: “Unfortunately, 148 people have lost their lives on Irish roads so far this year – an increase of 17 deaths compared to the same period in 2012,” the Midlands North West MEP confirmed.
