Irish authors joined this week to offer some advice for young readers in Mayo who are to take part in the 26th MS READaTHON, and reminded young people that there is still time to sign up. The MS READaTHON reading month begins today October 11 untill November 11 and any primary or secondary school student can take part through their school, library, local bookshop or online. MS Ireland’s biggest annual fund-raising campaign, MS READaTHON provides vital local services and support for more than 8,000 people with MS and their families in Ireland.

An Taisce – the National Trust for Ireland – this week expressed serious concern at Minister Coveney’s recent announcement that there will be no rollover of REPS and no new AEOS entrants in 2014. The Minister claimed that this would achieve “national and European savings of about €25 million”. However, An Taisce believes that these savings mean that thousands of farmers implementing environmentally beneficial schemes and sustainable forms of agriculture will lose, in some cases, half of their total farm income in 2014.

According to a report released by GeoDirectory from GKM Economic Consultants one-eighth of all commercial properties in county Mayo was vacant in the third quarter of this year. The survey also broke down the rates in the three big towns in Mayo, Castlebar, Ballina and Westport. The county town came out on top of the list with 19.3 per cent of commercial premises recorded as vacant, with 18 per cent in Ballina and 11.3 per cent in Westport.
