Submissions on new waste management plan open until December

The public have until Thursday December 19 to make submissions on the new regional waste management plan that is being put together following the reconfiguration of the country into three different regions. Mayo is part of the Connacht Ulster region, and Mayo County Council has been appointed as the lead local authority for the region, with Kevin Swift about to be appointed to the role of co-ordinator for the region. He will be based from an office in Castlebar. At the October meting of the Environmental Policy and Agricultural Strategic Policy Committee of Mayo County Council, the members of the committee were given a brief update on the progress of this plan.

Monumental sculptors to be held responsible if burial ground bye-laws are breached

When the burial ground bye-laws are finally passed by Mayo County Council, if there is a breach of the bye-laws in regard to the height and type of grave constructed, the monumental sculptor will be held responsible for it, it emerged this week.

Minister Ring welcomes funding approval for Greenway Activity Park

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring has welcomed the announcement that Minister Phil Hogan has given sanction for South West Mayo Development Company Ltd to approve funding of €207,292 to Newport and District Development Company (NADDCo) for the development of a greenway activity park (GAP) in Newport, under the Basic Services for the Economy and Rural Population measure of the Rural Development Programme 2007-2013.

False construction recovery evident in Mayo

The latest edition of the National Housing Construction Index compiled and issued by Link2Plans (www.link2plans.com) shows a false construction recovery evident in Mayo after the rate of commencements plunged since last year. Last year Mayo reported the second highest increase in commencements at 20 per cent compared to this year where it fell by three per cent. The rate of decline in the number of applications slowed somewhat from a fall of -24 per cent last year to -17 per cent.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny welcomes funding for Parke Community Hall

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has welcomed the decision to approve funding of €195,115 for Parke Community Hall under the LEADER element of the Rural Development Programme. The funding will allow for an extension to the existing community facility to include a funeral parlour, a multi-functional meeting room, a space for a permanent stage, and dressing rooms. Overall, the project will cost in excess of €260,000 and represents a massive boost to the local area, along with supporting jobs in the construction process.

Mayo thanked, as support for mental health funding doubles

The coalition Mental Health Reform this presented Minister of State for Mental Health Kathleen Lynch TD with a petition signed by over 21,000 people, calling for the government to keep its commitment to invest an additional €35 million in community mental health services next year. 10,000 people had signed a similar petition in 2012. This year, signatures were collected nationwide over eight weeks as part of the group’s Do What Works pre-budget campaign.

The Cube for Hospice

Kavanaghs SuperValu staff in Mayo are attempting to raise €100,000 in their charity campaign to buy the site for the Mayo Roscommon Hospice care facility in Castlebar. As part of this campaign they are holding a Cube for Hospice night on Friday November 1 from 7.30pm in the Wyatt Hotel. It will be hosted by Bernard O’Shea and Karl Spain. Tickets are €10.
