Shakespeare in the Park comes to Kiltimagh

This evening, Friday, William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream will take to the stage in The Sculpture Park in Kiltimagh for a very worthy cause with donations being accepted for Western Care Association. The production is being put on by The Non Prophet Organisation from Claremorris, the group have already put on a performance of the bard’s famous play earlier this year in McMahon Park in Claremorris, and it is hoped that a good crowd will come out to see the performance and donate to Western Care Association which works with people who are living with disability and face many difficult challenges on a daily baisis.

A young hairdresser was killed in a single vehicle collision last Sunday morning, Niamh Campbell died when her car hit a wall on the N17 between Ireland West Airport Knock and Charlestown. Her funeral Mass was held in St Michael’s Church, Taugheen on Wednesday morning last.

ISPCC Mayo is currently recruiting for the following volunteer roles for its Childline service and for advocacy services. Childline volunteers will be trained to listen to and support children and young people in a non-judgmental way via telephone, web, and text. Advocacy volunteers will be trained to raise awareness of children’s issues in the community and to ensure children’s voices are heard. William Carr and Sons seafood business, which is based in Killala, was placed into receivership last week and, according to national reports, is expected to be sold to Swedish seafood group Mondi. Receiver Kieran Wallace of KPMG was appointed by Ulster Bank to takeover the company last Friday.

The Manchester Mayo Diaspora weekend has been hailed as another major success by Mayo County Council, local TDs and councillors after its sell out concert and business event at the Bonniconlon Show. The weekend, which was supported by Failte Ireland and Mayo.ie, attracted a record-breaking 31,000 to north Mayo during Ireland's Bank Holiday weekend.

Mayo County Council called on people to ‘Bin It Your Way’ in a Gum Litter Taskforce (GLT) mid campaign boost which took place at Swinford Cultural Centre earlier this week. The event was a riot of colour with the eye catching ads displayed on GLT ad-bikes and a GLT media bike.

Mayo General Hospital held a very successful information day on quitting smoking in the hospital recenty. The event was organised by Claudia Oliveira, respiratory scientist and Michelle Redmond, a/respiratory clinical nurse specialist. The aim of the day was to inform members of the public, patients, and staff of the importance of quitting smoking. In addition, visitors to the information day were offered a carbon monoxide (CO) test. CO is a poisonous gas that has no colour or smell. It is one of the products found in tobacco smoke and this breath test can tell how much CO a smoker has in his/her body.

Castlebar College of Further Education (CCFE) has welcomed the clarification by Student Grant Organisation SUZI to ease confusion in relation to August 1 not being the final cut-off closing date for grant applications. CCFE Director Tony Deffely has welcomed the clarification by SUZI that this is not a final cut-off date, that student grant applications will continue to be accepted after the August 1 deadline. He also welcomed their effort to ease confusion by stating that applications for Colleges of Further Education should not be confused with application of student grants.
