Donal O’Shea, who for years worked in Clare Island and who put on a number of exciting and well received singles weekends on the island, is looking to bring people together again this time in Castlebar in assocation with Castlebar Lions Club as a fundraiser.

The weekend will take place from Friday, September 5 to Sunday, September 7 and includes a fantastic weekend of events, with ballrooms of romance, speed dating, blind date, fortune telling and trips around historic places in Castlebar. Cancer Care West golf classic
A golf classic in aid of Cancer Care West in Balla Golf Club will take place tomorrow, Saturday August 16. This will be the final fundraiser in memory of Brigid Cogger (RIP) from Straide, prior to the presentation of the money raised from other fundraising efforts. Eirgrid to lodge planning application for Castlebar to Bellacorick line today

EirGrid has announced plans this week to lodge a planning application to the Mayo County Council for the uprate of the existing 110kV overhead line between Bellacorick and Castlebar (part two) today, Friday August 8. The Bellacorick to Castlebar 110kv line is approximately 37km in length and is primarily supported by single circuit wood poles with steel angle towers. In 2013 part one of the uprate was completed, comprising approximately 17km extending out of the Castlebar substation.

Record breaking month for Knock airport

Last month saw Ireland West International Airport Knock break records as it recorded its busiest month at the regional airport. More than 91,000 passengers used the airport in July, which was 1,500 more than the previous record for the Mayo based airport which was set in August 2012 when 89,500 passed through the arrivals and departure gates of the airport.

Last year Ballina was the winner of the Pride of Place award for a town with a population over 2,000 and the south Mayo town will be hoping to follow in Ballina’s footsteps.

Fundraiser for the children in Gaza in the Olive Tree today

“I’ve children and when you look on the television or online and you see the suffering they are going through you feel like you have to do something,” said Mustapha Aboubi, the proprietor of the popular Olive Tree restaurant in Castlebar this week. Today, Friday, Mustapha will be donating all the proceeds from his business to children in Gaza who have suffered during the current conflict in the West Bank.

Double murder trial date set

The trial for the double murder of the Blaine brothers Tom and Jack last year, has been set for January 2014 in the Central Criminal Court in Dublin. Alan Calwey, Four Winds, Corrimbal, Ballina, was arrested and charged with the brothers’ deaths last year and has been held in custody since.
