Derelict sites coming back to the fore of attention for council

Mayo County Council is working its way through a review of the council's Derelict Sites Register since earlier this year and, according to council officials, the issue of derelict sites and getting them cleaned up and sorted is "coming back much more on the agenda".

Director of services for Mayo County Council, Tom Gilligan, this week gave a report to the elected members on the progress they have made so far. "We've made contact with a  number of owners who've done work in relation to improving their sites, allowing us to take them off the register," he said. "The work is ongoing, to date we've in the region of 100 sites dotted around the county." He went on to explain: "Particular issues coming up after the recession is ownership, as that could have changed hands a few time since the recession."

Ring hits out at critics of new Castlebar pool

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring, was back on his old stomping ground on Monday when he was back in the chamber of Mayo County Council to give a presentation on his work, with a particular emphasis on tourism in the county. The Minister, who was a member of the council until the dual mandate was got rid of in 2004, took his seat at the top bench of the chamber alongside the council officials rather than in the on the right flank of the chamber where he sat as a councillor.

More than two tenancies a week surrendered on council houses

Mayo County Council has seen more than two tenancies surrendered on council houses each week so far this year. Senior executive officer for Mayo County Council, Paul Benson, outlined the numbers to the elected members at their monthly meeting this week.

He stated that at the start of the year there were 140 vacant council houses and that number has come down to 113 at present, but the council has been handed back 113 tenancies by people so far this year and 133 new tenancies have been created this year.

West Mayo councillors reject discretionary budget cuts

Members of the West Mayo Municipal District this morning (Monday, November 9) rejected the proposed discretionary part of the districts General Municipal Allocation. It had been proposed that the elected members would have a discretionary allocation of €390,000 to spend in the area over the coming 12 months.

Swinford man pleads guilty to stabbing Dubs star Cooper

A Mayoman was on crystal meth when he carried out a frenzied and unprovoked attack on Dublin GAA star Jonny Cooper hours after attacking a taxi driver. Mark Lavelle (32) originally from Bollingbrook, Swinford but with an address at Basin Street, Dublin, was given a seven year sentence with the final two years suspended after he pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assault causing harm to the Dublin and Na Fianna footballer in the early hours of September 20, 2014 at Dorset Street Upper in Dublin. He also admitted to the assault causing harm to Thomas Smith at Kennelsfort Road Upper in Palmerstown at around 2am on the Saturday morning and to hijacking Mr Smith's car.

Mayo man serving life sentence for murdering his mother gets two and a half year sentence for throwing boiling water at a prison officer

A Mayo man serving a life sentence for murdering his mother has been given a two and a half year sentence for throwing boiling water at a prison officer. The court heard Celyn Eadon (24) has sustained irreversible organic brain damage due to drug abuse in his teens. He was convicted last year of stabbing his mother to death in 2011 while in a drug induced psychosis. The attack on the prison officer, which was captured on CCTV, was one of a series of violent incidents which occurred around the time Eadon was moved from the Central Mental Hospital (CMH) to Mountjoy following his murder conviction.

Conway-Walsh to host public meeting on Mayo’s Healthcare Crisis in Castlebar

Sinn Féin’s Dáil Spokesperson on Finance, Pearse Doherty TD, will address a public meeting organised by Mayo General Election candidate Cllr Rose Conway-Walsh that will take place in the Welcome Inn Hotel, Castlebar next Thursday, November 12 at 7.00pm. The event, entitled “Building a Public Health System that delivers for the West” will feature a talk from Dr David Hickey, a transplant surgeon who served as the Director of the National Kidney and Transplant Programme, on the topic of “building a coalition to fight for a national health system in Ireland”. Cllr Conway-Walsh will speak about the realities for the people of Mayo of the healthcare crisis such as MRI Waiting lists, delays in processing medical cards and broken promises on Rheumatology Services in the county while Pearse Doherty TD will outline Sinn Féin’s alternative for our national healthcare system.

Olympic silver medallist Kenneth Egan will be one of the sports stars and managers lining out to speak on Achieving Success in Sport – What does it take? a free, public seminar taking place in Westport Town Hall on Wednesday, November 11 starting at 7:30 pm. Kenneth, or Kenny, will be joined by James Horan, former Mayo Senior Football Manager, Valerie Mulcahy, one of the country’s most decorated sportswomen having claimed nine All-Ireland titles with the Cork Ladies Football side and Tom Mohan current manager of the FAI U17 national team. A member of the Connacht Rugby Team is also expected to join the panel but his name has not been confirmed at time of going to print.

Farrington to run for Renua in Mayo

RENUA Ireland have announced that their Mayo candidate in the forthcoming General Election will be Michael Farrington. Mr Farrington, who is based in the Mayo East area of the constituency, said in the wake of his nomination that his objective was to build on the strengths this unique part of the country has.
