Crossmolina takes the brunt of Storm Desmond

Towns in Mayo were this morning counting the cost of the damage cause by flooding after storm Desmond caused lashed the county over the weekend. Crossmolina was particularly badly hit by the storm with the River Deel bursting it’s banks and flooding the town.

Jobs plan launch abandons Ballina, Erris, and east Mayo, says Calleary

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny had a busy schedule around Castlebar on Monday, first launching the West Region Action Plan for Jobs alongside Minister for Jobs, Enterprise, and Innovation Richard Bruton in Cashin Print in Castlebar. The pair followed that with a tree planting ceremony at the IDA Advance facility on the Breaffy Road, which is due to see construction begin in quarter one of next year, before the Taoiseach paid a visit to the site of the new swimming pool and Outdoor Pursuits Academy at Lough Lannagh on which work began this week.

Woman seriously injured in Claremorris crash

A woman who was seriously injured in a crash between a truck and a car yesterday was airlifted to hospital following the incident. The crash happened on the N17 at Claremorris at around 12 noon yesterday afternoon (November 19). At the time of going to print, no further update on the driver's condition was available.

Millions of people around the world are joining together the weekend before the talks begin to call on world leaders to create a low carbon, just and sustainable, future for all. In Mayo, schools, community groups, churches, businesses and members of the public will join in and ask the Government to represent us in Paris by coming to an agreement to take definite action on climate change.

Voices for change conference this weekend

This Voices for Change conference takes place in Breaffy House, Castlebar, this weekend, starting this evening, Friday, and will carry on tomorrow, Saturday. The conference will explore the policies and agenda for government for those who are an alternative to FG/FF/Labour. The opening session, titled ’Rescuing Town and Country from The Two Tier Economy’, will also highlight the political culture that has allowed vested interests and political patronage to converge against the common good, and how to undo that, particularly in the areas of renewable energy, water, housing, and regional imbalances.

Another session will focus on the Brexit threat and how Ireland also needs EU reform. It will ask ‘if the spirit of the founding treaties that underpinned solidarity and equality among the member states is broken and if so can it be recovered?’ The organisers believe that the next government must use the opportunity the Brexit debate gives us and "put the Irish people first, unlike the last two that put the euro, bondholders, financial institutions, and the ECB first."

New pedestrian crossings to make Ballina safer — Mulherin

Mayo Fine Gael TD, Deputy Michelle Mulherin, has this week confirmed that Mayo County Council is to install two new pedestrian crossings in Ballina town centre, at Humbert Street and Bohernasup Road. Deputy Mulherin said: “I have been contacted by a number of pedestrians, many of them elderly, regarding road safety in the vicinity of the mini roundabout at Humbert Street and Market Square.”

Console to host Celebration of Light in Swinford

Families and friends of people lost through suicide in Mayo have the chance to get together to remember their loved ones at Console’s upcoming Christmas Celebration of Light. The evening of song, music, poetry, and reflection takes place in Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Swinford on Sunday November 29 at 4pm. The evening also includes the lighting of candles and a minute’s silence in the presence of others to remember those who are no longer with us on life's journey. More than 500 people lost their lives to suicide in Ireland last year. The event is one of nine celebrations of light being held by the national suicide prevention and bereavement charity Console, with some 6,000 people expected to attend nationwide.
