For more than 25 years Mayo Mountain Rescue has had dreams, big dreams, of one day being able to call some place home, having a base to meet, train, store equipment, and run the team from. There have been many attempts by a lot of members over the years in securing a premises for the team, however dreams don’t happen over night.

The Revenue department has announced that it is willing to make arrangements with both qualifying home and business owners in relation to certain taxes that are due shortly to them.
In a statement this week the department said: "Revenue is very aware of the difficulties affecting many households and businesses at this time due to flooding and is conscious that the payment of certain taxes that are shortly due, including Local Property Tax, VAT, and PAYE/PRSI, may add to the distress.

The main road from Castlebar to Westport has re-opened this afternoon after it was closed for a number of hours following a serious road crash earlier this morning. A two car collision occured earlier this morning at Sheeaune, just outside of Westport.

The final litter survey of 2015 by Irish Business Against Litter shows Castlebar to be Clean to European Norms, in 23rd spot among the 40 towns surveyed. The town was deemed ‘littered’ back in 2013, when it was last surveyed. There was a slight fall-off in the number of litter-free towns across Ireland, but no towns were deemed ‘litter blackspots’ and only one was ‘seriously littered’. The winning town will be announced at a function at lunchtime today in Buswells Hotel in Dublin.

The latest Daft.ie house price report has indicated that prices in Mayo have risen by six per cent. The report found that house prices in Mayo between October and December 2015 was on average €122,000 which was six per cent higher than in the same period in 2014 and ten per cent higher than prices were at their lowest point.

Natural gas flowed for the first time from the controversial Corrib Gas Field today (Wednesday, December 29). The project which has been dogged with controversy for many years received the final approvals it needed for the gas to flow from the Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources Alex White on Tuesday (December, 28) evening.

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny this week confirmed that the cabinet had approved €2 millon for the proposed Mary Robinson Centre in Ballina. The centre which will be built in Victoria House in Ballina, Mary Robinson’s birthplace on the banks of the River Moy, will be Ireland’s first Presidential Archive. Mayo County Council had provided an initial €1.5 million package to purchase the house and included the site next door and the construction of a new annex on the site
Speaking about the project the Taoiseach said: “I am delighted Government is able to support this historic centre in Ballina. Run in academic partnership with NUIG the Centre is supported by the Ireland Funds as well as Mayo County Council. It will incorporate a museum, archive, research facility, educational centre and events venue. I consider that this new development will form part of a co-ordinated approach to Museums and facilities across the region including the National Museum of Country Life in Turlough, the Michael Davitt Museum in Straide, the Ceide Fields in North Mayo the Jackie Clarke Collection in Ballina, the potential of Moore Hall in Carnacon as well as the Douglas Hyde Centre in Frenchpark among others.

A 45-year-old pedestrian died after he was struck by a car near Ballyhaunis on Wednesday night. The incident happened at Grallagh, Ballyhaunis, at about 11.50pm. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to Mayo General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Fine Gael TD for Mayo, Michelle Mulherin has confirmed that an announcement will be made in the coming weeks regarding 235 rural homes in Mayo which are without group water schemes. The residents of these homes have found themselves ineligible for funding for water infrastructure as a result of a change in funding guidelines and have been without a regular water supply for several years. This week Deputy Mulherin met with the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin after having raised the issue again most recently in Dail Eireann last week with the Minister for Rural Affairs, Ann Phelan.
Speaking after the meeting she said, “I have received confirmation that an announcement will be made in the coming weeks regarding these homes in rural Mayo that are without group water schemes. These people were left high and dry after the cessation of the CLÁR funding scheme in 2009-2010. Their group water schemes had been due to receive the requisite funding but are now caught in a bureaucratic bind and have been without a proper water supply for a number of years.
