The Mayo Local Community Development Committee Local Action Group (LCDC- LAG) has submitted a Local Development Strategy to the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government (DECLG) for the delivery of the LEADER Programme in County Mayo for the next five years.
The Mayo LCDC LAG is unique in the history of local development in Mayo as it brings together all of the local development companies which have been active in the delivery of previous LEADER programmes in the county with the local authority, statutory agencies, social partners and community representatives under one unified structure for the delivery of the new programme. Work has been ongoing since early 2015 to achieve consensus on a single strategy for the county and to ensure that the impact of the funding available to the county is maximised. Unlike previous LEADER Programmes, the towns of Ballina and Castlebar will now be eligible for funding which is a significant step forward from previous programmes.

Five Mayo students have been presented with €1,000 academic scholarships to study at Dublin City University. The scholarships were awarded to the following students in recognition of them achieving 550 points or more in the Leaving Certificate.

The conference will take place on the weekend of March 11, 12 and 13.
The two-day conference will include various lectures from leading sporting professionals across multiple codes which will provide delegates with a unique insight into high performance. It will open fresh possibilities, allowing coaches, players and people interested in sport to further explore new learnings and opportunities. Along with the lectures the conference will facilitate numerous workshops and practical demonstrations that will support ongoing learning and development.

The challenge of Sinn Féin’s Rose Conway Walsh faded away from early on Saturday morning the real action was on the battle between Lisa Chambers and Michelle Mulherin for the final seat.

A total of 92,315 people are eligible to go to the polls today in Mayo with 200 having already voted on the islands yesterday, where there were 121 eligible voters on Clare Island, 29 qualified voters on Inishbiggle and 50 registered voters on Inishturk. The 92,315 eligible voters in Mayo represents a drop of 8,645 from the 2011 General Election, with the majority of those votes in the south Mayo region now being cast in the Galway West - South Mayo constituency. The number of eligible voters does not include postal voters or special voters. The figures were released by returning officer Fintan Murphy on Wednesday afternoon, and he will be the man who will be running the show in the count centre in Castlebar on Saturday when the boxes are opened at 9am.

Fine Gael Cllr Cyril Burke said that the jobs announcements for Castlebar this week are a testament to the great efforts that have been made by the Government and Mayo County Council to spread job creation to rural towns in Ireland. He said that the people must understand that it takes time to deliver jobs to any location.

The issue of local roads that are not in public ownership has seen a couple in Achill being prevented from buying a house, it was claimed by local councillor Paul McNamara. The Achill based Fianna Fáil councillor told the February meeting of the West Mayo Municipal District that the couple had agreed a mortgage with the bank but the sale could not go through because of the ownership of the road.

More than 40 teams have entered this year’s Operation Transportation, the Westport Smarter Travel challenge that encourages participants to rethink their daily commute and to choose smarter travel instead over the Lenten period. Now in the third year of Operation Transportation, the challenge was changed slightly to open it up to more participants. Previously is was business and community group focused, however this year, all members of the community can participate by entering a team of four to six people. Families, workplaces, community groups, friends and schools have all entered teams this year making for a very diverse challenge.
