Sentencing adjourned on learner driver until January

Judge Mary Devins adjourned sentencing this week on a Ballinrobe man who pleaded guilty to driving without insurance. Thomas Ackroyd, Carrowkeel, Ballinrobe, Co Mayo, was detected after being involved in an accident at Scardaun, Claremorris, on November 23 2009.

Con man who swindled €390,000 pleads guilty to theft of a van

A Galway man currently serving five years in prison, for his part in a con operation where an elderly Galway woman was swindled out of €390,000, pleaded guilty to theft of a van from Claremorris motor auctions this week. Con Murphy with an address at 116 Castle Park, Ballybane, originally pleaded not guilty to the charge in court, but changed his plea to guilty because he told the court he wanted to get it sorted out and get on with his life.

Prison for man who failed to pay compensation

A Ballyhaunis man who was in court in June, and given a chance to pay compensation to two injured parties for criminal damage he caused to their property, was sentenced to three months in prison this week in Claremorris District Court after failing to pay any monies.

Second stage of Ballina traffic management plan to kick in

The second stage of the Ballina traffic management plan will be implemented at the end of the month with a number of changes in the direction that traffic may travel on streets in the town. The new management plan, which is the second phase of the development, will come into effect on Wednesday September 29 at 8am. The plan is aimed at discouraging through-traffic from the centre of the town when it has no business in the town. Streets that will be affected include Tone Street, Hill Street, Casement Street, and O’Rahilly Street. Traffic on O’Rahilly Street, Hill Street, Connelly Street, and Tone Street will now move in the opposite direction than it did previously, with Casement Street, Bridge Street, and a portion of Market Street becoming one-way only.
