No plans to shut down Mayo General Hospital but painful cuts still ahead

The devil was in the detail as the HSE finally disclosed its cutback plans for Mayo General Hospital this week, which will include cuts in staff numbers through “moratoriums and natural staff turnovers”, reduced working hours for temporary staff (amounting to 7,000 working hours every week off the rosters of 400 temporary staff throughout the region), bed closures to be achieved through essential-only admissions to hospital with day assessment prioritised and direct cuts on elective surgery that will directly impact on patient waiting times.

Barrett wants savings on bridge tenders

Labour Party Castlebar town councillor Harry Barrett has expressed concern about the money to be spent on the erection of a pedestrian bridge at Lough Lannagh. It is believed that the lowest price quoted for the bridge is €630,000. Cllr Barrett is demanding that contractors be asked to give a discount on tendered prices, and that any money saved be given to repairing footpaths on the Turlough Road.

Planning permission can be extended

Mayo Fine Gael TD, John O’Mahony, is calling on Mayo County Council to contact all planning applicants whose planning permission is due to expire within the next six months. Deputy O’Mahony said he believed the authority should do this as a once off gesture to people who may not be aware that for a cost of €62 applicants may get an extension to their planning permission for up to five years.

Castlebar gardaí launch positive ageing initiative

An Garda Síochána in Castlebar this week launched a “Positive Ageing’ programme designed to help keep older people safe in the locality. Members of the community in the town were invited to attend for a ‘Meet and greet’ at Castlebar Garda Station where they were hosted by Sgt Tony Cosgrove and Inspector Willie Keaveney who outlined simple preventative measures that can be undertaken to ensure their safety.
